Among the vacant spaces at the mall: A 1902 boiler building by the banks of the Neponset.

Urban Edge Properties of New York has purchased the Shops at Riverwood on River Street at the Mattapan Line for $32.9 million from Finard Properties, which started building the mall on the grounds of a sprawling former paper mill in 2008. Read more.

MassDOT reports it shut the River Street bridge over the train tracks to vehicle traffic today after "bridge inspectors identified beam deterioration during a routine and fracture critical inspection." Read more.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved plans by two physical therapists to turn what used to be the Quality RX Pharmacy on River Street near Hyde Park Avenue into a function hall specializing in weddings, graduations and similar events. Read more.

Developer Rise Together has told the BPDA it will soon file detailed plans for two six-story residential buildings, one to replace a repair garage at 1590 Blue Hill Ave., the other behind it on River Street. Read more.

David Cange first started planning his Fritay Haitian restaurant a couple of years ago. Covid-19 forced a delay, but Cange went before the Boston Licensing Board today to seek a food-serving license at 532 River St. in Mattapan Square.

Developer Joey Arcari has filed plans with the BPDA to replace one of the city's more unusually named convenience stores, at Washington and River streets in Lower Mills with a 24-unit residential building with 18 parking spaces. Read more.

Boston Police report arresting Eddie Osborne, 37, of Mattapan, on charges he shot two men inside Mello Vibez, 473 River St. shortly after 11 p.m. on Feb. 19. Read more.

Update: Suspect arrested.

Live Boston reports a man and a woman were shot inside Mello Vibez, 473 River St., next to Macumba Latina, in Mattapan, around 11:05 p.m. on Saturday. The woman was taken to a local hospital with injuries serious enough to have the homicide unit called in; the man, who had a gun on him, was less seriously injured.

Boston firefighters responded to 1808 River St. for a fire shortly before 10:30 p.m

They managed to confine the fire to just one room. Residents got out by themselves, there were no injuries.

Boston Police report arresting men from Attleboro and Dorchester and a kid from Mattapan on charges they held up the Santander Bank branch at 860 River St., near the Mattapan line, shortly before 4:30 p.m. Read more.

The Boston Licensing Board heard details today of a pair of violent, and likely related, incidents at Macumba Latina, 477 River St. that left a patron with with his right forearm slashed open and a man in the parking lot across the street lying on the ground after getting hit in the head with a baseball bat. Update: Licensing Board found the club had adequate staffing and could not have foreseen the problem, so no violation.

The owners of Macumba Latina on River Street in Mattapan say they have stopped Thursday-night events that were heavily promoted in Brockton following a July incident in which River Street was shut by knots of people throwing punches at each other. Read more.

Update, 10/14: Problems fixed and an inspector let the restaurant reopen.

Farrah's Cafe Restaurant, 1158 River St., which was shut on Sept. 23 for violations that included a leaky kitchen sink and live cockroaches in the basement, failed a re-inspection yesterday after an inspector found the sink still leaked and that the live roaches in the basement had been joined by live roaches in the kitchen. Acting Mayor Kim Janey said today the city will spend $2 million renovating space in the Muni on River Street in Hyde Park's Logan Square to serve as a new health center for a neighborhood that has a lower life expectancy than the city average. Read more.

Firefighters at Mother Brook

The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters were able to rescue somebody who somehow wound up in the Mother Brook where River Street crosses, near the intersection with Readville Street and Neponset Valley Parkway, shortly after 8 p.m. The department reports firefighters handed the person over to Boston EMS for transport to a local hospital.

No, not John Kerry over his failure to shovel his sidewalk after one of the 2015 blizzards - Kerry admitted his wrongdoing, paid his fine and never had to address city leaders.

In 1879, John Conness, who had been one of California's senators during the Civil War, and then retired to the life of a gentleman farmer in, of all places, Mattapan, agreed to appear before a City Hall committee investigating alleged improprieties by the city's superintendent of streets, some of which involved the upgrading of River Street along Conness's farm. Stanley Stacos reports a man was shot on River street near the Boston Public Health Commission campus, shortly before 1:30 a.m. He was found in some bushes with injuries not considered life threatening.

The Boston Licensing Board today suspended the liquor license for Macumba Latina, 477 River St., after BPD detectives found a long line outside and lots of people without masks inside, as well as a DJ, last night - all violations of state and city Covid-19 regulations. Read more.
