The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that a Cambridge clerk-magistrate can hold public hearings on whether to bring charges against a couple dozen alleged clients of a ring that flew in prostitutes from Los Angeles and Las Vegas to render sexual services in high-end Cambridge and Watertown apartments turned into brothels. Waltham District Court Judge Ellen Caulo set bail today at $10 million - or $100,000 cash - for the man accused of giving his pregnant girlfriend abortion pills in the guise of vitamins and iron supplements after he found out she was pregnant. Read more.

Update, 5/28/24: The two sides reported they have reached a settlement and asked a judge to dismiss the case. Terms were not disclosed.

Uncommon Grounds, with four coffeehouses in the greater Albany, NY area, yesterday sued Uncommon Grounds, which has a coffeehouse on Mount Auburn Street in Watertown, for trademark infringement. Read more.

Watertown News reports on a man who walked into a local marijuana shop, ordered up $36 worth of "pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes," then pulled out what appeared to be a gun and announced he'd be paying for them "the old fashioned way" and walked out with the product.

No sale: Visitors to brothel Web site today were greeted by seizure statement.

Federal officials today announced the arrest of two Korean nationals and a Korean-American on charges they ran a series of brothels in newer high-end apartments both here and in northern Virginia, following an investigation that began in 2020 that involved stake-outs, phone surveillance, rooting through trash and interviews with customers. The Supreme Judicial Court today ordered a new trial for a man whose gun-possession conviction it overturned earlier this year, ruling that while it is true the Supreme Court's latest Second Amendment ruling would have nullified his conviction, he was tried before that ruling was announced, so it goofed in overturning his conviction. The Boston Transportation Department has decided this is the year of the 39 and 57 buses - and has launched studies to see how to improve their routes to get people to and fro faster - and let them "wait comfortably at their bus stops and board the bus safely." Read more.

Cambridge Police report they and their counterparts in Watertown are looking for a guy they say has robbed two spas at knifepoint - in North Cambridge around 5:50 p.m. on May 14 and Watertown around 4:50 p.m. on May 16. Read more.

Watertown News reports (scroll down a few pages) police descended en masse on a local house shortly after midnight on April 26 after getting a call from a man who claimed he had just shot and killed his girlfriend there. In fact, he hadn't, and he wasn't in Watertown and a woman in the house was in the middle of a live performance on Twitch at the time.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that a Supreme Court decision last year that lets people pack guns for protection outside the home means it has no choice but to overturn a Boston man's conviction for the gun and bullets Boston and Watertown police found in his glove box - but the court upheld his 2 1/2 to 3-year sentence for one of the magazines they also found.
