State officials say next week is when workers take the first real bite out of the Casey Overpass - they're scheduled to remove a piece of the abutment on the rotary side of the hulking, crumbling bridge.

Along with that comes the first overpass-removal detours: Traffic heading from the rotary into Jamaica Plan will be diverted onto the temporary road that's been built alongside the Arborway bus depot - which means the gazillion traffic lights the state has installed will blink into use.

Mulhern was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last night, Boston Police identified the pickup as the one that hit a van shortly before the fatal crash at Morton Street and Blue Hill Avenue.

The antiquated Morton Street bridge over the Fairmount Line shuts at 9 a.m. on Friday so the state can replace it with a more modern span.

Officials say the new bridge - pre-built off site - will be moved into place this weekend and that it should be open to traffic by 5 a.m. on Aug. 18.

Due to the work, the 21 and 26 bus routes will be detoured.

More details.

And why would a billboard owner let them?

This billboard sits at the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Morton Street in Mattapan. There's another one in Jamaica Plain.

State historic-preservation officials on Friday acknowledged there's no feasible alternative to replacing the apparently historic Shea Circle when the Casey Overpass comes tumbling down, Clayton Harper reports.

Harper attended a Friday meeting between the Mass. Historical Commission and the state highway officials anxious to replace the crumbling overpass with a series of surface roads before the thing tumbles to the ground of its own accord.

Morton Wine and Liquors found itself before the Boston Licensing Board today after a detective cited them for letting customers come into the store, fill up those cups and drink in the store.

On Aug. 3, the detective told the board at a hearing this morning, he nabbed a 20-year-old walking into the Morton Street liquor store with a red plastic cup containing "an amber alcoholic beverage." This came after a couple of days of observing empty red cups littered in the street near the store and in a trash barrel outside it.

Memorial Drive crash

Just as the Cambridge blackout was lifting, three cars failed to occupy the same space on Memorial Drive by the Mass. Ave. Bridge. Brian D'Amico, who took this and several other photos, reports two people were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

An officer at the scene stated that even after the Accord struck the second car, it kept accelerating forward for awhile.

Earlier, around 10:25 a.m., a roving UHub photographer snapped a car taking things one step at a time on Morton Street, near Blue Hill Avenue, in Mattapan:

Robbie Felder, the omnipresent Mattapan panhandler whose disappearance a few months back sparked rumors he was dead, is back slowly walking up and down Morton Street, quietly asking for money.

By adamg - 3/6/11 - 9:43 pm

The rumor spread like wildfire tonight: Robbie Felder, who has spent much of the past decade shuffling up and down Morton Street asking for handouts, was dead.

Not true, counter people who say they know his family: Nobody's seen the white-bearded guy recently on Morton Street by Blue Hill Avenue because he's in rehab.

The story unfolded on his Facebook fan page (yes, of course, he has a Facebook fan page):

The Globe reports 14 people were injured in a crash this evening between an MBTA bus and a minivan at Gallivan Boulevard and Morton Street. The one saving grace: There's a fire station right there.

Anybody who's ever driven down Morton Street in Mattapan knows the white-bearded guy who shuffles up and down the middle of the street by Blue Hill Avenue. Our own eeka reports that for some continuing-ed class, she did "a functional behavioral assessment" on him:
