The state is shutting the Great Ditch Bridge - that nasty little piece of work on the Dedham side of the Great Plain Avenue exit - at 8 tonight for work to get the bridge ready for its replacement by a span on which you won't have to worry anymore you'll get into a crash that will send you into the water. Researchers at Olin College are looking at programming robots with what sounds a bit like Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, the Boston Business Journal reports:

Think of a fire-fighting robotic dog that sacrifices itself to rescue people ... Or of a robot riveter that stops short of punching through a human workers’ misplaced hand because the robot has been programmed to value human safety over assembly line efficiency.

Needham bank robber sought

Needham Police report the TD Bank branch at 89 Highland Ave. was held up around 4:15 p.m. yesterday by a guy who actually put a mask on. Recent years have seen a decline in the number of bank robbers who bother to disguise their faces.

By Stop Litter---Yes On 2 in 2014... - 9/20/14 - 7:20 pm

We need to stop litter and keep Massachusetts clean by spreading the word about the Yes on Question 2 campaign.

The Bottle Bill is the most effective recycling tool we have. Eighty percent of bottles covered by the Bottle Bill’s 5-cent deposit are recycled. Yes on Question 2 would add a bottle deposit to water, sports drinks, tea, juices, and other drinks that were not included in the original bill because they were not popular when the law was passed in 1982.

We need your vote on November 4 to update the Bottle Bill.

Old town-line sign at Needham-Dedham border.

Old town line sign. See it larger.

Get off 128 at Great Plain Avenue and head towards Dedham and you'll see what looks like a driveway just before the Dedham line.

It's actually the remains of an old road, one that now dead-ends at the soon-to-be-expanded 128. Park by the gate, and you'll see the old town-line signs. Look down toward the river and you'll see an official boundary stone (like this one). Then look at the phone poles and lines that still run along the side of the road - and continue across 128.

128 tied up

The scene at Great Plain Avenue. See it larger.

A rollover on 128 north by Highland Avenue early this afternoon quickly bogged traffic down. The luckier drivers were able to get off an exit or two before.

Isis

Isis Parenting, which provided classes, consulting and products for expectant and new mothers, announced yesterday it's closing all of its centers in the area - Back Bay, Arlington, Needham and Hanover.

The chain, which started in Brookline in 2003 - and which provided pre-natal classes for a number of local hospitals - broke the news on its Facebook page last night:

With heavy hearts, we announce the extremely sad news that Isis Parenting must close. Effective immediately, no classes or phone consults will take place.

Brim Beanie Bandit

The FBI reports it's looking for a guy who has robbed or tried to rob five banks in the Boston area this month, including a Bank of America branch on Gallivan Boulevard in Dorchester and a Braintree Cooperative Bank branch in Braintree.

The G-Men have dubbed him the Brim Beanie Bandit because of the style of hats he seems to prefer and because he's a bandit. The bureau adds:
