Norman Miller has written about beer for the MetroWest Daily News for 12 years now. He announced today he's giving it up:

I am killing the Beer Nut so Norman Miller has a chance to live.

I’m killing myself. That’s not hyperbole, it’s the truth. My lifestyle is killing me. I’m middle-aged and obese. I need to make changes so I can see 45, let alone 50 or beyond.

Green Line trolley on Rte. 9 in Framingham

John Costello was waiting for a light on Rte. 9 westbound outside the Shoppers World Olive Garden around noon today when a Green Line trolley rolled past.

For the past few years, the T has been sending trolleys out to some factory in upstate New York for rehabbing, but generally, the take the turnpike to the New York line, so what was the trolley doing on Rte. 9? Maybe the flat-bed driver just had a hankering for some unlimited breadsticks.

USA Today reports the Dedham and Framingham Toys R Us are among the stores to be shut as the chain goes through bankruptcy.

The Dedham Toys R Us is next to what is now a former Sears store.

When the heat gets too hot, Worcester and Needham Line trains have to go extra slow because, of course, the tracks weren't designed to handle regular-speed trains in the heat. Or as Goodband-C puts it when talking about what is normally 33-minute ride on the Needham Line:

Crawling into South Station a quick 80 minute trip from Hersey.

IDG, which earlier this year was acquired by a Chinese company, is laying off a sizeable number of employees, possibly more than 90 editors and reporters in newsrooms in Framingham and California.

It already has its first police investigation of a political act and, as befits the town turned city, it involves a) campaign literature shoved around and b) John Stefanini, who used to be a selectman but who is now running for mayor.

A federal jury today convicted Barry Cadden, owner of the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, of racketeering and related charges for the fungus-laced drugs that killed 64 people across the country, the US Attorney's office reports.

However, the jury acquitted him of second-degree murder charges.

Sentencing was set for June 21.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge has ordered a Florida doctor and his wife to pay $13.5 million in penalties over the deceptive marketing methods they used in their now defunct Framingham erectile-dysfunction clinic, the state Attorney General's office reports. Read more.

Prevailing sentiment in progressive haunts is “2016, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Between a stressful election season, acts of terror, and the crisis in Syria, many of us will be glad to see the calendar page turn on Sunday night. Still, to every cloud there is a silver lining, and at least when it comes to tackling climate change in the US, Massachusetts was a bright spot amidst the clouds of 2016.

The MetroWest Daily News reports officials at Keefe Technical High School and Marian School have called off the season for their joint hockey team after concluding "an overall toxic and negative culture that has permeated the team dynamics." The News quotes a parent who is upset the entire team has to suffer for the actions of six players she says told "jokes that mention of the Holocaust and referring to stereotypes of people who practice the Jewish faith."

An outbound Worcester Line train gave it all it got, but that just wasn't enough to get past Framingham, so now its passengers have to wait for another train and people who were planning to come into town on the rebound ride will have to do the same.
