I hate that dirty water in West Roxbury
By newchristine on Mon, 05/18/2009 - 12:30pm
Anybody having a problem with rusty water in West Roxbury? I'm in the "bird streets" area....and I've been GIVEN the bird...BWSC says they are blameless, along with the Public Works Dept....however, a fire hydrant that was flushed recently on my street had very rusty water....where do you go after both depts. virtually tell you not to bother them anymore?

If the problem is somewhere from the main to your house...
then it might be your problem and you might have to pay to fix it. Im not 100% sure what your problem is but homeowners are responsible for maintaining many of the pipes in your house. I think you can pay a fee for someone in the BWSC to come out and take a look but Im not sure.
Not likely
Muddy water happens - and also basement floods - when you have a busted pipe going into your house from the main.
Rusty water comes from big-scale rusty pipes. We have had so much of it in my neighborhood due to multiple main breaks that it fouled the filter in our fridge and we have had to run our taps for a half hour on cold each time it happens.
If there have been repairs recently, try this: turn every tap in you house to COLD and then run them for 15 minutes. That should clear out everything left in the line. Otherwise, report this as a possible leak and check the pipe on your own property - are there wet spots? Are there areas with mini-sink-holes? Is there water coming into your basement from the yard?
How long?
How long has this been going on? Typically after hydrants are flushed or used homes in the area will experience rusty water. It should clear up by itself.

Thank you all for your help! :-)
My problem is getting BETTER, but it's been a long wait (about a month!) I will check out all the options you suggested...hope it's a "clean-water Summer"!! I try to be civilized in every way, after all. ;)
hydrants do that
This happened to me the first year I was here, and it was the hydrants. I remember the water dept saying they published a notice, and the lady being all huffy about it. I imagined helmet-haired ladies sitting at desks reading the Herald all day, they would be the only people who thought publishing a legal notice was actually an effective way to communicate.
Anyway it goes away after a while.
This is what robo-calls are for
and if your city doesn't do them, you should complain.
Sadly, we can't all live in Somerville
That's crazy talk, Ron. Next thing you'll be suggesting we implement 311 or something :-).
