Flaming manholes across the city

The Boston Fire Department is being kept busy this evening responding to multiple reports of manhole and power-line issues as overloaded lines give out under all the demand and heat.

That's what I smelled then..
as I walked over a transformer that was under the sidewalk near Washington and East Berkeley Streets.. Now I wonder if I should have called the Fire Department...
Don't bother with NSTAR
I had a catch basin near my house that smelled like burning electrical insulation. I called NSTAR and they said "call the Water and Sewer department" and of course the BWSC said "if it's electrical, call NSTAR".
I split the difference and called the fire department. That way a report got filed and the BFD called NSTAR and the BWSC to deal with it. They had a bit more authority than I did, and the street was being excavated that day.
It turns out that an aging power line was grounded through its rusting conduit to the rim of the catch basin. That explained why all the snow melted on it the winter before. I'm just glad no ones child or pet was electrocuted.
