$1-million bail for woman charged with murder of innocent neighbor in rage against boyfriend

Melissa Pfeiffer, 27, of Chelsea was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court today for a Christmas Eve fire that killed one person and left three injured. She was held on $1 million cash bail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

Pfeiffer was indicted on charges of asecond-degree murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and arson, and two counts of criminal conduct by causing injury to a firefighter.

Prosecutors charge Pfeiffer set her boyfriend's stuff on fire after they had a fight and that the fire spread to the apartment above them, ultimately killing Crystal Blanchard and injuring Blanchard's boyfriend and two firefighters.

Assistant District Attorney Julie Higgins said Blanchard's boyfriend suffered third degree burns, fractured vertebrae and a fractured ankle when he was forced to jump out of a window. Two of the firefighters experienced smoke inhalation while trying to put out the fire.

Higgins said Pfeiffer admitted to investigators that she set the fire. She is scheduled to return to court for a hearing May 5.
