New Back Bay Latin American place shows promise

On Les Gourmands du South End, Jeff dishes on his first visit to Michael Schlow's new Tico on Berkeley Street, which serves up a mixture of Latin American dishes. His verdict: He'd consider a return trip, but the music needs to be toned down.

I'm hitting Tico's on Friday. Been to Back Bay Social Club and Lolita in the past few months and can assure you I won't be back to either any time soon - so loud it rendered decent food unenjoyable.

I think there's a method to this - tends to keep older diners to a minimum and younger drinkers to a maximum - much more profitable for the operator I would think. My friends and I walked out of BB Social and Lolita's in agreement that they were far more interested in being a bar than a restaurant.

The noise was also a part of the Tico conversation over on Chowhound's Boston Board.

I noted that the noise would drop the place 5 spots on my list of new restaurants to try. Southie came in and said that on Sunday night the noise was not a problem.

Noise in restaurants is a hot topic all over the country right now. Some food critic are publishing a rating for noise in their reviews.

...about the attention to noise levels that is. I guess I'm just damn old but I really can't stand LOUD restaurants and bars that are loud for no good reason. I certainly have nothing against loud music in the right context. And in some restaurants if it's a choice between the Rancheros blaring over the sound system or the annoying people at the next table, I'll take El Rey any day. But there comes a time when young or old it's just tiresome screaming at the person directly in front of you and them still leaning forward and saying "Ehh?"

And as long as I'm airing out my ballooned prostate, nothing ruins a good bar like a FUCKING ENORMOUS AND LOUD TELEVISION. Pull it out for a sporting event (and I mean a major sporting event, not the intramural curling meet) if you must, but the other night I was in a bar that was showing Nature. While I enjoyed watching the monkeys while waiting for my table, more often than not there is some annoying crap on the tube and I just want to drink, not watch annoying crap. Like morning shows.
