LaMattina thinking of running for register of probate

The Dorchester Reporter breaks the news on City Councilor Sal LaMattina's ruminations. Like the city clerk's job, the register job has traditionally been a haven for city councilors who want to move on - if he runs and wins, LaMattina, who now represents East Boston, Charlestown and the North End, would replace Richard Ianella, who retired last year.

What Sal thinks his strengths are. Drive around his home town of East Boston and see all of the "long standing issues" he's incapable of fixing. Look in the gutters and see all of the trash, look at the vacant buildings and lots, look at the walls covered with graffiti, and ask Sal about them. All you get is an acknowledgement that these are issues that people have complained about for a long time. Roam around Central Square (once the heart of the neighborhood) and see how safe you feel. Drunks, drugs and thugs...but no useful response from Sal.

What East Boston are you talking about? East Boston was the safest neighborhood in the city in 2011. Councilor LaMattina and the Mayor secured a new multi-million dollar library; new Greenway connection (3 miles plus of multi-use pathway from the waterfront to the beach); $4 million redesign of Central Square; million dollar renovation of EB stadium; $20 million new health care facility in Maverick Square; brand new Chelsea Street bridge; redesign of American Legion field for 2012; a new plan to spur waterfront development after the economy collapsed; and that's just in the past two years.
East Boston also has the fastest growing youth population in the city and one of the largest artist populations outside of Cambridge and Somerville.
Good leadership matters and Councilor LaMattina has played an important role in East Boston's success.

Sal is one of the hardest working City Councilors out there. He knows the issues, and proposes the best plan he believes can best tackle the problem. Some of them work, some of them might not but at least he is trying to make his district and his city a better place for all of us to live in. Maybe you should pitch in and help rather than post an anonymous comment blasting him for not doing anything as you do nothing yourself to help out.

This has been in the works a long time, kind of like the Maureen Feeney thing. Sal was talking to people about this before Ianella even resigned but no one really took it seriously. Now the election is in September and he appears to be the only one who is positioned to pursue the office. Is anyone out there getting tired of this stuff? If he is in any way suited for this assignment, which affects so many people's lives in a very fundamental way, he has yet to display any evidence of it. To anyone who has dealings with the probate court, which handles divorces, adoptions, child support, guardianships, estates, etc. - be afraid, be very afraid!
