One obstacle removed on road to casino at Suffolk Downs

Channel 4 reports Robert Kraft and Steve Wynn are suspending their effort to get a casino built in Foxboro, now that Foxboro voters have given anti-casino forces a majority on the board of selectmen - giving the Suffolk Downs proposal even better odds at getting the one eastern-Mass. casino license. Voters in East Boston and Revere still get to vote on the idea, however.

....and more drunken assholes, increased traffic and petty crime is not welcome in Eastie. Drunken knifings, weekly apartment burnings and the current traffic is more than enough.

Like we don't suffer enough with the gas tanks and airport. Now we get to host every louche on the east coast.

Casinos do not make good neighbors. The drunks, the traffic, the crime that such an establishment will bring are simply not worth it. There are already enough problems here. And don't believe the mythology about how it will "create jobs for the locals". You think Wynn and Kraft won't bring their own workers with them? You think there aren't websites for experienced casino workers willing to relocate? Whatever minimum wage room cleaning jobs will be created are not worth it for the immense trouble a casino will bring to the neighborhood. I am not for it.

No doubt traffic would be worse, but a high end casino could bring more people who want to spend money to the area. This might mean nicer restaurants, shopping places, cafes, etc to the immediate area. This in turn would make a cleaner neighborhood.

Crime going up? I'm not so sure. Depending on how it's run, you can eliminate rid raf from casinos with relative ease.

Drunks? Maybe not as well. Unless people are parking on the other side of residents, I don't see how they would effect anyone. I rarely see drunks at Foxwoods or the Mohegan.

Typically destination casinos keep people in the8ir clutches until their bank accounts are dry. That's how they stay in business. That means having a veritable Epcot Center of food options available. Keep it as inclusive as possible to keep people form spending their money elsewhere.

We already have some nice restaurants. The only businesses that will benefit might be chain hotels that go in on rte 1A (already a new one proposed). Not exactly small, mom and pop operations. Small businesses will not benefit from the casino. Some may not be driven out of business (convenience stores, taco places), but I seriously doubt there will be a positive effect. I also don't see "shopping places" springing up because of a casino. If you want to shop you go to Copley or Newbury at the high end or out to malls in the burbs. Can't imagine people swinging by the Marshalls in Revere after an afternoon of blowing their rent money at the craps table. People not from East Boston are not going to venture out from the casino to "explore the new businesses in East Boston."

I totally agree with John W. Petty crime? I'm more worried about major crime. It is bad enough here, we don't need anymore problems...

A casino in Boston will grab a lot more tourist dollars than one 45 minutes away in Foxboro. I'd also like to see a revitalization of the race track aided by casino revenue. It would be great to see the MassCap be an important date on the racing calendar again.

A nice theater will be a plus too. I don't gamble much but like to go to the track on big race days and would love to see that enhanced.

Being able to see a show, get dinner and paly a few hands and take a cab home or to a hotel is huge. I hat foxwoods in the booines.

I thought they might close the track and build the casino on the grounds.

Horse racing is dying a slow death in this country. I certainly like horse racing more than casinos, but can't say I actually ever went to a horse race, despite having relatives in Louisville and having spent my summers a couple miles from Rockingham Park and growing up not far from Suffolk Downs.

Sadly horse racing as we've known it is not doing well. It takes up a lot of space and does not provide as great a return as slots or table gambling. Keeping the ponies at Suffolk is a great talking point for old timers (hello Mr. Speaker), but the economics of it will dictate that the horse track be converted into something more efficient -- an event hall, more casino space, slots, whatever.
