Shocking: Man who showed up at hospital with severe burns may be guy who tried to steal cable at old power plant

Boston Police report a man currently in critical condition at Mass. General with burns may be the person who cut a heavy-gauge copper cable at the old South Boston power plant last night, causing smoldering that brought the Fire Department to investigate.

Police say the man, not yet charged and so not named, showed up at Boston Medical Center not long after fire alarms began going off at the power plant on Summer and 1st streets. He was later transferred to the Mass. General burn unit, police say.

Police say officers recovered "an electrical saw, what appeared to be a canvass bag, used cigarettes, and a cell phone" at the power plant, where firefighters encountered smoke on the second and third floors - and a cut power cable. However, police say they have yet to enter the giant building to look for more evidence on the advice of fire officials, because of potentially hazardous fumes. The building is mostly windowless.

I could never figure out exactly what goes on in that building. At one point some years ago I worked in an adjacent building and we could see into the power plant through the window. We once saw an apparently topless woman being photographed. At another time a scantily clad woman was on a ledge being filmed for what we thought was a music video.

The Yuppie who bought an overpriced condo next to me asked the realtor what the power plant was. He was told by the local real estate agent that they were going to make a waterfront hotel and luxury condos there. He figured he couldn't go wrong buying next to that monstrosity. That was 10 years ago and he's still waiting.

There is still an active generating unit in the building.Where the thieves keep getting fried by trying to steal dead cable(which is shockingly still alive) is N-star side of the site.

So:

-We have people stealing public water fountain fixtures, and even many tons of decorative artwork (remember the bridge decorative artwork scandal?)

-We have people attacking homes ripping out the pipework and wiring, infrastructure both utility and private (cell phone and radio towers), causing millions of dollars in damage and lost services

Nobody at the scrap yards where these crackheads and methheads are going are asking questions.

It's high time the state stepped in and bitch-slapped the people making millions off the destruction.

Ban cash payments for scrap metal. Checks only, mailed, to a non-PO-box address. If you do a lot of scrap recovery work, then you're a legitimate business, and you have a real street address. If you're a fucking meth-head, then your quick route to some cash just disappeared.

Ban collecting scrap metal over a certain very low weight limit without a contractor's license.

Require a photo be taken of both a load brought in, the person bringing it in, and they have to state the address where the material was collected. Spot audit, with jailtime penalties.

If someone turns in obviously illegitimate material and the scrap dealer accepts it and doesn't call police, press accessory and possession of stolen materials charges.

Like with all the fucking crackheads and methheads robbing our neighborhoods because of the revolving door nature of our courts thanks to poor theft punishments, institute a three-strike policy or exponentially-increasing jailtime for each conviction, even if it's petty theft. Our police and courts are clogged with scum who have long since figured out all the crimes they can commit with, at worst, few months of free meals, hot showers, and cable TV.

I would assume it was also scrap metal theives who stole most of the metal footprints from the large statue of Kevin White in Faneuil Hall. I also notice they have never been replaced.

And you really have to wonder at what scrapyard knew they were stolen (or saw it later on the news) and didn't say shit to the cops because the bronze netted them a healthy profit.

Maybe he just needs to spend a few months
in the pokey. I'm sure his "I hate everything"
attitude would change once he gets his cable TV.

We'll be sure to add HBO and Showtime because
obviously his whole life has been one big poor
outcome.

OTOH, he's saved a lot of $ on therapy sessions
because he can rage here for free. Many thanks
to Dr. Adam Gaffin.

He's also 100% correct on this topic. Incentives, folks. He gets it.

I say we burn the guy again.

Let's just be happy he didn't knock out power to that hospital he went to.

Very hateful. This man has a son. Although what he did was wrong, his son does not deserve you people saying things like this about his father. Especially when you do not know the circumstances.

I honestly just don't understand how people can be so blind, so quick to judge when all you know about the situation is a few paragraphs. What if it was your father? Your uncle? And you had to read the awful comments people post? How can one human being say that another should be burned? Who are you to be the jury, judge and executioner? It's just sickening that this is what the world has come to.
