BC hockey fans are potty mouths

The campus newspaper wishes BC fans hadn't spent their energies yelling "Fuck Northeastern" at a Friday hockey match:

The growing number of students who use obscenities in chants at home BC hockey games is unacceptable, and the student body and Athletics must move to end the practice.

Stay classy, Boston!

This is nothing new, and NU is not the only one. BC's goal chant is "You Suck", they yell this at the opposing teams goalie. BU's is "Fuck'em up, Fuck'em Up, Fuck'em up..... (Insert team) You Suck".

But hey YOU stay classy!

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove by citing two other equally-classy Boston teams, but, hey, swearing is really cool, right?

Commenting on something you have no knowledge of is even cooler.

If you don't like it don't go!

Why do you assume that I have no knowledge of collegiate douchebags?

My condolences.

No, the chant is always "Fuck em up. Fuck em up. BC sucks" regardless of opponent. Northeastern? BC sucks. Maine? BC sucks. Miami? Yup. Bentley? You know they're a university now. Probably didn't like the cheer. Mankato State? I don't think they've played, but if they did, you betcha.

The athletic department tried to crack down in the cheer. It is less now. Of course, they should have been looking at other behavior at the time.

... "Yankees Suck!" being used even when Yankess are not being played?

But the exact same thing.

I was thinking that the reduced frequency of the chant at BU probably has more to do with the fact that BC is now (by far) the preeminent college hockey program in town (and the country - having won 3 national championships in the last 6 years and having also been national runner-up twice since 2006), whilst another formerly great in-town program has descended into a morass of scandal-ridden disarray.

But, yeah, it could have been the BU Athletic Department's efforts.

Not.

Don't get it twisted: it sucks even more than it used to BU, people.

in one of the sorriest threads to ever grace this forum. BC fans talking smack about college hockey. College hockey! Guffaw.

Oh, sorry. Millbury didn't even last the summer since he found out that the program had more scholarships promised than scholarships available.

As far as the school whose fight song somehow says "down the field to score anew," they've been doing well, compared to the Huntington Street crowd whose poor team was the subject to the taunt at the top.

As far as that other cheer you reference goes, that was chanted back when Quinn was playing for BU, and that was truly the crappiest time for the program in the Parker era.

Hoping to wish Jerry York a long and happy retirement soon, and wondering why Johnny Gaudreau didn't go pro after freshman year.

Can we once and for all retire the phrase "Stay Classy, [insert name of city here that made the news for doing something 99% of all other cities do as well and is in no way indicative of the "class" of said entire city]"?

Um, having lived in New York, I can confidently say that I didn't worry about a riot any time one of the local teams won the big game.

Good point. Clearly that means that nothing bad ever happens in New York ever.

There has been rioting of some kind after almost every Yankee WS win-- this video, which took all of 10 seconds to find, is from 2009. It just happened up in the Bronx, which I assume you don't think of as part of New York City.

It's a college hockey game. Get over it.

It's not just a matter of censorship for the sake of some outdated Victorian mores. There is a matter of economics. These games are not only attended by the student body. In order to be profitable, tickets must be sold to those outside of the campus, including kids and families. If the games become well-known as places where obscene (to some) chants are continually heard, ticket sales are likely to fall. In addition, TV and radio revenues must be considered. It becomes less palatable as broadcast fare if the broadcasters have to worry about running a seven-second delay on the crowd. This impacts the viability of the programs themselves.

Is there some significant portion of the general public to whom "Fuck Northeastern" or "Fuck 'em up" is no longer considered obscene?

up

Otherwise they wouldn't be chanting it.

Well, in my experience, most people use obscenity *because* it's obscene but to each his own.

BC, who is equally guilty is complaining about NU for something their student body partakes in.

Like i said previously, if you knew anything about college hockey you would know that this will fix its self now that the Hockey East is being watered down by adding more teams. BC and NU don't have anymore regular season games this year, only tournament matches.

Look, season series concluded in past seasons where it was 3 games this early in the past. Less games means more nonconference games, which tests mettle of the teams nationally. Notre Dame is an odd fit, either a flight or a looooong bus ride, but it is not watering the league down.

How am I turning this into U.S. College Hockey Online? Sorry.

I'd guess there's a much larger number of people that are unconcerned with old fuddy-duddy ideas of "obscenity" than you think.

I find students chanting FUCK far less obscene than a bunch of old men who have never married or had women in their lives much deciding that their female employees can't get potentially lifesaving medications covered and yet viagara is sacred.

I find students chanting FUCK far less obscene than a Church that those students study under deciding that, since Catholocism doesn't like gay relationships, then our laws should ban them.

Fucking people out of their rights on the basis of religious doctrine - including those who don't subscribe to that doctrine - is fucking obscene.

You essentially make it sound like the people who attend these games outside of the student body don't have a clue what goes on at them. These chants were basically all passed down BY those very same people who are attending.

And as for TV and radio revenue, how much exactly does NBCSN and 98.5 pay for the rights to air something that gets a 0.0 share? It is just not that big a draw.

The colleges market the games to attract new fans. If those marketing efforts lead to a one-and-done attendance, then the marketing is largely a failure. And that's what may happen when someone not having attended previously is put off by an off-color chant. This is especially true if Dad is trying to give his sons or daughters an inexpensive sporting day out in comparison to the professionals, which is often the case. When a day turns into Dad having to give an impromptu explanation of what, exactly, "Fuck" means, that's not a marketing success.

The money gained via broadcast is not comparable to big-time pro games or college football, but it's still a payday for the college. For sports such as college ice hockey, any extra revenue can be a make-or-break.

I can't say I blame them. These kids lived a sheltered life before they got out of Weymouth.

A lot of people I know who grew up in Weymouth knew how to smoke, drink, and swear a lot before they got out of Weymouth.

how BC students were able to remain sober long enough to chant anything.

It's not just at the two hockey schools with "Boston" in their names, it's even worse out in Amherst at UMass hockey games, and has been for some time.

College hockey is a ticket bargain for families, but they don't need to hear this.

"it's even worse out in Amherst"

That can be said for just about anything...
