Northeastern University yesterday filed detailed plans with the BPDA for its proposed replacement for Matthews Arena on St. Botolph Street and laid out longer-term plans for several new buildings across its campus, including dorms and lab buildings, some 20 stories tall, that could dramatically change the look of one stretch of Huntington Avenue if built. Northeastern University today filed a "letter of intent" with the BPDA that it plans to replace Matthews Arena - built as Boston Arena in the early 1900s and once home to the Bruins and Celtics - with a new 290,000-square-foot facility that will include both an arena for university teams and a fieldhouse for recreational student use. Northeastern University announced it's planning a Manhattan outpost through the acquisition of Marymount Manhattan College, a liberal-arts school on the Upper East Side (East 71st Street to be exact). The newest of Northeastern's roster of campuses outside 128 will be renamed Northeastern University - New York City.

The Boston Licensing Board today ordered a one-day license suspension for Walsh Wine & Spirits, 388 Washington St. in Brighton Center, which police detectives cited on July 19 for selling tequila, rum and other drinks to two guys who were under 21, in the latest such incident at a place that had become popular among Boston College and Boston University students. The Huntington News reports on the controversy over Delta Kappa Epsilon's annual alligator roast, which the boys decided to hold this year on campus instead of at their Mission Hill house. In addition to an alligator on a spit, the event featured a severed alligator head on a chair. Naturally, you want to slow roast your gator, so the brothers turned the thing on the spit for some eight hours.
