Last night, there were a couple of loud booms by the Hennigan School in Jamaica Plain, where somebody set off some M-80s, but that was nothing compared to tonight, when Boston Police are being kept busy responding to reports of gunfire that turn out to be fireworks. From Roslindale to Brighton, Dorchester to Roxbury, residents are dialing 911 at a rapid pace to report sudden retorts - fortunately almost all of which turn out to be people celebrating Let's Blow Stuff Up Every Night Through August Day.

Let people shoot off fireworks, but make them do it within a window between 9 and 10 PM. That way, we might learn the difference between a gunshot and a firework.
It's not so much the noise which is an issue.

Our tightly packed buildings and a bottle rocket on a poor trajectory can quickly become a lethal fire.

...we used to hold the bottle and aim them...from the hip, not near your face. At each other.

We used to light the bottle rockets and then throw them up in the air. Then you hope they don't come back at you.

or not at a car. Especially not at a passing police car, completely by coincidence. Not that this ever happened to me as a kid or anything. Ahem.
Which is why..

ugh.. i wish we could do this in Chelsea. between June 28th and July 5 every night its 4-5 hours of different people shooting off fireworks. The police do little about it (We've been told "it's the 4th, deal with it"). Not even when a neighbor four houses down was shooting off.. I'm guessing.. around $2k in fireworks one night for about 3 hours. They were so close to the other houses, I was sure one was hit it and start a fire. Chelsea FD/PD did nothing to stop them.
BUT I agree, like Dot and Allston, the houses are just too close to each other to be shooting off fireworks in your backyard. Too Close. We had roofing work done on our condo building last year and the builder showed me scorch marks all over the roof from fireworks. He told me if one was light enough, our house would have burned down (or mad a nasty hole in our rubber roof). *shakes head* I guess people don't care unless its their own house who catches fire.
And.. to think MA has a fireworks ban. Some ban.. its obviously not working..

I don't get the appeal of firecrackers and other such fireworks. I never have, and I was raised around here. They make a loud noise. Big deal.
I'm glad that the noises

aren't bombs going off but when did it become OK to set off fireworks in densely packed neighborhoods? The noise pollution in the city is bad enough, but summer brings it to a whole new level of awful.
