Today, it was the Orange Line's turn to smolder

A smoldering cable near Haymarket shut down the Orange Line this morning because the T shut off power to let workers safely repair the cable. A T spokesman says power was restored around noon.

Fortunately, God graced us with the Green Line, so people not in the mood for a leisurely jaunt on a nice September morning were able to get from here to there and back again.

dispatcher had the foresight to actually send extra trains to North Station and Lechmere, instead of turning 80% of the trains at Government Center.

But I seriously doubt that happened.

And, personally, I am getting so tired of these "improved" alerts that tell you service is shut down, but give no indication as to the actual problem.

As I've mentioned in other posts, I have a coworker who listens to WBZ radio (and forces us to as well because of the radio placement and volume)

Between the time I got the inital T alert about the Orange Line closure and the time I read about the "all clear" on UHub, there was no mention whatsoever of the closure, which impacted a key portion of a major subway line, on WBZ, Boston.com, or the Herald web site.

In New York City, the traffic reports on the major stations also mention significant transit system delays. Seems to me we should be able to do the same thing here.

Yes, but in Boston, we know that public transportation is for LOSERS!!

as they should have, but they definitely did on the Traffic on the 3s at 11:53. Can't say for any other time. Generally they don't mention it though, and that has always irked me. I get not mentioning every little thing, because they'd have no time for anything else, but a major shutdown on the Orange Line is definitely news worthy.

I've got to be more careful about making those "absolute" statements.

I survived this crisis by hopping on a hubway bike. Make it your Plan B!

want to do that in the middle of a February snowstorm. Oh wait, Hubway doesn't operate in the winter. Never mind.

I know a lot of people who bridge bad/missing links in the system by using hubway (e.g. North Station to Fort Point or Seaport District; back bay to Central).

I and others have had mixed luck with Hubway and breakdowns as many people are now carrying the keys. If you aren't one of the first dozen or so (depending on the number of bikes available), you're going to walk or wait.

now there's a line that I have never heard, and which I might never hear again.

But Satan snatched it away after Adam and Eve blotted their copybook.
