Mark Watson reports the station let go Tom Doyle, responsible for the parody songs and "Men from Maine" bits on the show and is further slashing humor and music to emphasize unfunny talk, which is dirt cheap, apparently.
According to his bio, already purged from the WROR Web site, Doyle has done more than 300 "Townie Tunes" for the station, including "Charlestown," done to the music of Petula Clark's "Downtown" and odes to local malls and routes 1 and 24 and the Lynnway. Also, "the Rectum of Edmund Fitzgerald."

I did radio in high school

I have no idea how that business still exists. The kids apparently don't listen and everybody tunes out the commercials.
Here's my theory on the decline of radio

I've been listening via the internet to a radio station. Yes, this is a problem, but were it over the air I would be inclined to tune in the traditional way, too. The format is the classic album oriented rock, with a few popular hooks thrown in. This would typically not be my thing, but the DJs keep me tuned in. The banter, the odd news bits, the quizzes they have people call in to take- this is what keeps my interest.
Kicking out the guy who does the bits is a horrible idea (and I don't listen to them to start.) Take away the personalities and you may as well just listen to Pandora.
I get a kick out of the fact that Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck started playing rock music over the airwaves. Boy, that's a long time ago.

I can't understand why he got let go. I would have canned LBF, she was the last one in an isn't the talent that Tom is.

LBF is so much better. Tom took half his jokes from the Internet, and any he wrote himself, you could see the punchline coming a mile away. A lot of the bits he did, he took from Chris Paul the person who had that job before Tom. Tom was hired after Chris passed away. I didn't think Tom's departure was a big loss.

Boston radio at one time was

Boston radio at one time was rich with talented, created people. Loren and Wally along with Tom Doyle were the last examples of that. In many ways they were the heirs of Jess Cain's legacy with their bright silly/witty skits and bits.
WBUR and WGBH radio still have some good local news shows. As far as entertaining radio goes, ROR's morning lineup was all that was left. BZ used to have the quirky wit of Steve Leveille, but hasn't found a good personality since.
With the exception of public radio, radio is now largely commercials interspersed with factory produced music and crazy and/or cynical people acting crazy.
Corporate ownership killed the radio star.

I've been listening to WROR for 15 years and love every minute of it. I cannot believe they got rid of Tom Doyle. He may not have been the #1 or #2 guy but he played a big part in that radio station. Big mistake! Love you WROR!

dear tom, you will be sadly missed, maybe loren & wally could have taken less money to save your job. your wit & humor has always kept me and my family a constant listener even when we moved to Michigan last year we always tune in via the internet. please let us know what new station you will be with so we can change stations. your talent on the show surpassed even loren & wally
