Fire rips through West Roxbury house

A two-alarm fire Thursday night did an estimated $300,000 in damage to a house on Caledonian Avenue, behind Sofia's Italian Steakhouse on the VFW Parkway, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Both occupants of the house got out safely after the fire erupted shortly before 9:20 p.m. at 81 Caledonian Ave.

State and Boston Police shut the VFW Parkway in both directions south of Spring Street so firefighters could more easily get to the fire and tap into a hydrant on the opposite side of the parkway.
