I always wondered how an integrity challenged scumbag like him could continue to get work with local media. WGBH's continued employment of him is appalling.
He seems to enjoy high regard among segments of the national media as well. For example I remember when Tim Russert passed away Barnicle featured in network interviews as a close family friend. I find this completely mistifying considering the circumstances of his departure from the Globe.
Howie's fading popularity is chiefly among what's left of the no forced busing crowd. Why else would he have to keep schlepping all over New England selling his picture books of sociopaths, ya know?
His listeners call him captain. He served his country and fellow man by writing a book with a mass murderer. He recently put newly elected congressman Seth Moulton in his place by calling him John Kerry. Lets compare hero Howie and faker Moulton.
Howie - Four tours of the ice cream shop
Moulton - Four Tours in Iraq
Howie - made lots of money with a business partner/mass murderer who killed 19 or more people
Moulton - Battle of Nasiryah Navy & Marine Co. Commendation Medal for Valor
Howie - professional stenographer
Moulton - Battle of Najaf Bronze Star
Howie - His employer has not been sued for libel (this week)
Moulton - earned rank of Marine Co. Captain
Howie - earned lemming rank of captain
Howie knows what really matters to blue-collar, working-class Mass residents. That's why he lives in a modest triple-decker in Southie instead of moving out to a big mansion in Wellesley or something. Wait, what?
Mike Barnicle was always more popular than the "bad boy". Because he was a better writer and story teller, where Howie early on fell into just crafting together tips from disgruntled (often with legitimate reason, by the way) into formulaic columns. Howie always had the potential to be a good reporter and writer, but always seemed to go for the cheap shot.
As to Howie's entrepreneurial endeavors, books, tee shirts, key chains, cup warmers. He's simply following the lead of Limbaugh and O'Reilly, who discovered that their fans would pay money for the written down version of the same stuff they listened to on the radio or watched on TV everyday. Like actors and actresses suddenly appearing on TV commercials, it's easy money.
However, this thread is about Mike Barnicle. A good writer, and good speaker who chose to act as the most powerful mouthpiece for John Connolly;s propaganda about White and Co rather than do any real reporting.
We now know thanks to much good reporting from the Boston Globe that South Boston was ground zero for heroin deaths in the city at the time. Michael Patrick Macdonald's, "All Souls", along with Dick Lehr and Gerry O'Neil's, "Black Mass" gives a good account of the times. While Barnicle was literally writing fiction.
Much as Howie Carr is a loathsome figure, to the best of my knowledge, he is not complicit in covering up a heroin racket and murder ring after the fact like Barnicle was.
The moment I witnessed it, I had doubts about Charlie Baker's New Bedford fisherman story. Menino's death the next day and the media's obsession with same definitely stopped any traction Coakley might have gained. Barnicle is truthful here, unlike the "black kid and the white kid" who sought some type of racial harmony while dying at Dana-Farber.
Speaking of Globe columnists, has Barnicle's true-to-form protégé Kevin Cullen apologized yet for the outrageous Boston Marathon report of little Martin Richard dying while "waiting for his father to cross the marathon finish line?" As if the true Islamic terror story weren't despicable enough, the father hadn't run the marathon (a family spokesman came out of the funeral home to correct the record) but the Globe still got its Pulitzer without any correction that I'm aware of. Don't believe everything you read.
After all, the papers choose which stories they submit for conisderation. Hardly an independent review process, and hardly insures that the truly good stories will be vetted.
Let's not forget how Barnicle's columns in the 80's portraying Whitey Bulger as a Jimmy Cagney like Robin Hood character who kept local thugs from bothering little old ladys as they walked down the sidewalk.
Mike has always had a talent for storytelling and it's taken him far with different venues that value good style. Consider "the award winning Chronicle", Tim Russert and now the (with tongue firmly in cheek), Morning Joe.
You mean he was mainlining coke into Southie instead of keeping it out? Next thing you'll tell me is that pyramid schemes and hair in a can don't work.
He's just upset that an Irish name like Coakley should have won in a state with a large Irish catholic population, What does Menino's wake have anything to do with Coakley losing, Was Mike Barnicle intoxicated or something when he made this foolish comment !
Anne Finucane is his wife. That's it. If not for her, Barnicle would be fighting for table space at Busa Wine and Spirits with Howie Carr over who will buy their shitty books.
Coakley equals Fells Acre and Brookline Nannie. In both cases her prosecution was evil.vindictive.andwithoutmerit. She's just mean. I hope she's gone for good.
Barnicle gets a lot of flack about this but he has been an influential voice in the media on a variety of topics, and they are rich in originality. There's reason he's "the most obsessed-about journalist in town" (http://www.bostonmagazine.com/2008/12/mike-barnicle/).
