There were many variations of this airplane. Some without the glass nose and multiple 50 calls in the nose and in nacels on the side. Occasionally they had some 50 calls and a 75mms cannon. Most I have ever seen had a top turret at one of two locations.

These are cool planes to see and are still in the area this week - here's their schedule.

The P-51 is gorgeous and a you can get a ride in it for a mere $3200/hour.

I think that price is for an hour of instruction with stick time.

These are amazing pieces of history, and represent so many things beyond aviation technology, such as the failure of diplomacy, the moral ambiguity of bombing civilians, the terror of depending on them for your life so you can fly back out in them again the next day. I image they would evoke some powerful memories for those who lived through the war, and there are fewer and fewer of those people left every year.

It's good to know they are being preserved.

I was on the beach down in Ocean Bluff last Thursday taking a day to enjoy the unusually warm weather & water & first heard, then saw two of these bombers flying northward about 45 minutes apart around 5 pm.. One of the people with me recognized the planes immediately after I gave her my binoculars because her Dad flew in one in WWII. Now I know thee wasn't some rip in the space/time continuum ;-)
