Charter school looks to build new school building across from Boston Latin Academy
Bridge Boston Charter School has filed plans with the BRA to renovate an old health center at Warren and Townsend streets into a 400-student school across Townsend from Boston Latin Academy.
The charter school, which now served students from kindergarten through grade 4, expects to expand to grade 8 and would build a new gymnasium as part of its proposed $21-million project on the 2.35-acre site. Students would move from existing leased space at McLellan Street at Blue Hill Avenue and Samoset Street in Dorchester.
Bridge Boston says it will seek to avoid compounding existing traffic issues caused by the beginning and end of school at BLA in part by having different hours.
The school would have 49 parking spaces.
The school hopes to begin construction this spring, with the building ready for students in 2017.

why doesn't Boston go 100% charter
In the 8 yrs my kids have been at the b.l.a. there has been $800,000 in maintenance projects. The place is falling apart. If somebody is putting $21m into a charter school around the corner isn't that a sign of where the city should be putting it's energy?
$21million
I know what you mean. It seems like the private sector is just chomping at the bit to get into the city and plop down as many $21 million charter schools as they can, but nobody let's them do it.
No, no, no - it's a hedge fund scam!
Just ask 10 people on twitter. First they'll build facilities and take over old Catholic school buildings which can't be used by BPS, then they'll suck out all the money in the BPS budget and buy mansions in the Hamptons. That's all charter schools do you know.
