Craft-beer store on tap in Roslindale

The Boston Licensing Board next week hears a request for a license for a proposed craft-beer store in the old substation at Washington Street and Cummins Highway in Roslindale Square.

Bryan Reeves and Marty Alvares-Reeves, who have long been hobbyist brewers, want to open Craft Beer Cellar in the basement of the substation, which is currently being renovated - and which will also include a restaurant. They hope to open this winter.

The board's hearings begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in its eighth-floor hearing room in City Hall.

This is great. The only people I can see not liking this are the folks from Solera Wines and Atlas Liquors. We tent to buy bombers of various new finds at Solera, but are consistently underwhelmed by Atlas. Luckily, craft beer is a secondary market for both retailers, so a craft beer-only store shouldn't hurt them *too* much.

We need a coffee place first!

I'm kind of hoping that's what the expanded Derna's does, at least in the morning.

I keep hearing about how they're going to focus on lunch at the new/expanded Derna's. Coffee would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath it'll be the coffee spot the Square needs.

Well, the original post about this restaurant here on Universal Hub said the hours would be 6 AM to 1 AM. I have no idea if the plans have changed since then, though.

If I need craft beer in Rozzie, I will go drink it at Redd's or buy it at Chance Liquors. The new owner has dramatically increased the amount of craft beer they carry since he took over, and is really great about ordering things that are not in the store. That said, if they get the license I will be sure to stop by and support a new local business.

Honestly? I'd much rather see this new restaurant have a performance space and entertainment license as those are 2 things the Square actually needs.

Not to pick on your personally in any way, but why does it have to be an either-or situation? I see that mentality from people a lot. Same goes for the comment above on wanting a coffee shop first. There's room for all of these things but people need to open the businesses so let's encourage all of it.

Love love love this store. I frequent the mothership (aka Belmont) store. Hopefully this location is just as delicious.

Is it on tap in that, like Trilium, they will fill grogs up for you or is it just a store that stocks craft beers? If the former, are they gonna get kegs from various breweries for this purpose? That'd be pretty unique.

The law in MA is that growlers sold for retail can only be filled at the point of production. So while you can get them pre-filled at well-stocked liquor stores, you can't get them pulled fresh except at breweries or brewpubs. Bummer.

Somewhat more happily, a change in the law this spring now makes it explicitly legal that these containers need not be labeled or provided by the brewer - customers can provide their own, so long as they are made of glass and are designed for the purpose of storing malted beverages. So if a brewer is willing to (re)fill your growler, you can save a few bucks.

I know the CBC will do this, as will several of the small craft breweries in the Boston area (Trillium as you mentioned for sure, and others).
