Developer plans 700 apartments near Boston Medical Center

Leggat McCall is proposing a two-building complex on land it bought last year from Boston Medical Center between Harrison Avenue and Albany Street and E. Dedham and E. Canton streets.

In a letter of intent filed with the BRA, the developer says it would tear down several buildings and put up two new ones - one 19 stories, the other 11 stories. Leggat McCall says it would retain an existing and vacant building at 575 Albany St. and incorporate it into the project.

In addition to the apartments, the company says it is planning "artist live/work space" and a gallery on the ground level, as well as space that could be used for a restaurant.

Existing parking lots on the parcels would be replaced with an underground garage, the company says.

Boston Medical Center sold the land as it tries to consolidate its sprawling campus.

Fun trivia: the manufacturing operation that used to be in 575 Albany before it burned out stored more radioactive material there than anyplace in the country that isn't a nuclear power plant or waste site.

I smell a future lawsuit brewing..

"but we didn't know that there was radioactive waste there when we bought our condo"

Makes me wonder if the developer knows this issue.

If you are already ok being next to a major hospital/med school, labs are not an issue.

Labs dealing with deadly pathogens are a bit different than typical hospital labs.

When I worked in a lab that was essentially on hospital grounds, I worked with things that could kill me on a daily basis.

Good lab technique keeps the germs in the lab, whether your are a BL-2 lab or a BL-4 lab.

The building was decontaminated by a firm specializing in making such things safe.

Cite your source please for the amount of radioactive material the lab contained and was released due to the fire. I can't find any information online substantiating your claim.

The release of radioactive material during the fire and the quenching of said fire by the application of a million gallons of water by the BFD was actually less than that allowed to be released on a normal work day of the manufacturing operation. The people who worked there were really good at containing radioactive material.

The manufacturing operation used tens of thousands of Curies of radioactive material. Needless to say, the company did not advertise that fact.

I go that area with my bible and circle all the commandments I see being broken.
What a lovely area! I hear they're also building luxury condos on the corner of Urine and Crimespree.
