Man falls off Long Wharf; firefighters fish him out of the harbor

Shortly after midnight. Arriving firefighters fairly quickly got him out of the water and into a boat, to await EMTs - who also had to help a firefighter injured in the rescue effort.

There was an anon a while back who was claiming the bodies that would periodically be discovered in the harbor or along the Charles had to be victims of foul play, and that there was obviously some serial killer at work.

Someone should ask this guy about who pushed him in.

(That said, happy this did not end badly.)

I just received this from the Director of the School of Music:

Dear colleagues, students and friends:

It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that the body of John Daverio, our beloved friend and colleague, was retrieved from the Charles River on Monday evening, April 14. While we have waited in sorrow and fear, we have kept hoping that John would somehow find his way home to us.

Now the harsh reality of John's death must be faced. We grieve bitterly for him and for all who continue to work without his unique example of musicianship, scholarship and humanity. We grieve with and for his parents who face darkness and sorrow over the loss of their only son.

We will gather today - Tuesday, April 15, at 5pm in the Concert Hall - for comfort and support in this moment of shock, sadness and pain.

I'm glad that this time, things turned out well. Let's hope the person who pushed this gentleman in gets caught.

There's a theory/urban legend floating around the internet that there's a small nationwide network of serial killers going after intoxicated, solo young men and pushing/throwing them into the water, causing them to drown.

While I don't doubt that it's possible that this could be the case in any individual circumstances, chances are that most of these accidents are caused by poor motor control due to inebriation. If you're a drunk guy going near the water (to look at the pretty reflections, to pee into it, you thought you saw a fish jump, whatever) you're just simply more likely to fall in if you're really drunk.

I suspect this theory has gained traction simply because a lot of people who die in drunk accidents are good people- they're ordinarily responsible individuals whose actions leading up to their death were within the normal and socially acceptable bounds of social alcohol consumption, and their families and friends are in denial over how their loved one just drew a really bad hand that night.

GOD BLESS OUR FIRE DEPT. THEY ARE ALWAYS THE 1ST TO ARRIVE WHEN THE
RESIDENTS ARE IN NEED. AS WE ALL KNOW, THE FIRE DEPT. CAME TO THE
RESCUE ON FULTON ST. IN THE NORTH END WHEN ICICLES WERE DRAPED ACROSS
A CONDO BUILDING, WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED VERY SERIOUS INJURIES, AND
WHICH WAS ALSO THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CONDO ASSOCIATION. THE FIRE DEPT.
STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT THEIR JOB & RESOLVED THE
PROBLEM. GOD BLESS OUR FIRE DEPT.
