The tallest, brightest building downtown

Millennium Tower

The new Millennium Tower building where Filene's used to be in Downtown Crossing already seems to be the tallest building downtown - and will get taller still. And, at least until it gets closer to completion, the construction lights make it the brightest building downtown.

Daytime view from the ground.

Great for night kayaking and sailing!

Tallest building in downtown?
25 feet taller then the ugly Federal reserve building.
Soon there will be Rolls Royces , Lamborghini's, Mabach's and Austin Martin's rolling up the front entrance of this building, greeted by a butler who will ask patrons of vehicles "would you care for some english tea" or "how about some gray poupon madam"

Awww, I work in the Fed building (although not for the Fed) and here is how I rationalize why I actually like the building:

1) It's *supposed* to be a fort.
2) The infrastructure at the end of the building mean the floors have no internal obstructions, the view from our open format space on the 20th floor is *amazing*, it's like standing on a platform in the sky.

I get people thinking it's ugly ...

"Filene's Tower" is timeless and captures its location and history. "Millennium Tower" is uninspired and hackneyed.

Go down to Broadway and turn left where the Standard Oil gas station used to be.

And if you are going there by T, the name of the subway stop is Washington Street, not Downtown Crossing.

I used to work at a company like that. People were giving me directions like "It's across the street from the old [name of this company] building." I'm like "You know I've only worked here for a week, right?"

They will have missed the millennium by about 20 years once the tower is finally opened and occupied.

It's named for Millennium Partners, the company that's building it.

Thank you, I'm going to start calling it this myself. Every time I say "Millenium Tower," I think about how stupid that name is. Also, having grown up in Rhode Island, this goes hand-in-hand with our tendency to give directions entirely based on where things "used to be." Even in my hometown, there's a particular turn that I know as, "where Apex used to be." That Apex has probably been closed for at least 20 years now!

unless they're doing night time construction maybe they could turn off at least some of those lights. You know, polar bears, melting ice caps, etc...

Not that you're ever going to get a decently dark night sky in a city, but you can't even see the moon in Boston. It's pretty depressing.

I've been working late nearby. There are some workers in that building until well late at night. I'd rather have a few pieces of coal burned than a dead laborer.

This building is going up very fast and it looks like they are trying to meet specific deadlines.

Yup...that is a poured concrete building not steel so there is a lot of work to do around the clock to keep the concrete flowing regularly.

I remember my dad's paving crews would switch to night work when the heat got going. It greatly reduced the heat hazards and raised productivity.

Very true. A lot of times the day crew will be in charge of moving the formwork up to the next floor and setting the rebar and the night crew will pour the concrete

They were adding a floor every week and a half. Seems about right.

Its going up fast and with minimal disruption on the surrounding streets.

You mean that floor where Ladies' Lingerie used to be?

Yes, I can confirm work continues at night, although there are less workers. Easier to sneak in.
