Thumbs down on thumbs up for now

I've turned off the voting on comments while I try to figure out why the site keeps slowing and crashing. There's a database table that's supposed to be used for triggering routine site maintenance, but it's been filling up with hundreds of thousands of items related to the voting system and I want to figure out why before turning it back on.

been wondering what's wrong lately... slower than molasses and lots of "CloudFlare" pages with content that is weeks old :)

TLF sabotage! Pull the boards now before the ED209 goes haywire!

That probably explains the "Emergency software update - the little gnomes are working hard. Be back in a bit." messages I've been increasingly receiving over the past week or so.

That's me with my little bithammer, smacking away at the database. I'd actually noticed that table filling up with stuff two or three months ago. Cleared it out and things seemed fine for a few weeks. Now it's happening more and more frequently and I don't think it's because all of you have gone thumbs mad.

You dug the table out! You should be allowed to to keep it for a while!

A little off topic, but I'm having trouble finding the answer anywhere.

After my last Appple IOS update, the safari browser on my iPad no longer saves logins and passwords, even for a site like Uhub where there is no personal information to be stolen. so anytime I change websites even, it logs me out. I've tried settings and looked online, but my efforts have been futile. Other browsers (Google chrome, etc) are not great to work on the iPad for some reason.

Any suggestions or answers? Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread.

My suggestion is.. but this is my blanket answer to anything ipad/iphone related.

1. Backup to iCloud
2. Reset your device (delete all settings and applications)
3. Restore from iCloud

This restores it to factory settings. Then icloud will bring everything back.

Yes sounds generic but this fixes most issues with the ipad/iphone since there's no real way to 'reset' one application (especially built in ones like Safari)

The fact that you don't remain logged in is most likely a cookies problem.

Check your Safari settings for cookies being enabled.
Is it possible you've run out of every bit of room on the drive so it can't save new cookie files?

Apple really dumbs down those settings, and I'm pretty familiar with them. My iPhone still saves them though, so I'll probably have to reset something like Cybah noted above.

Thanks

I'm sure you don't need help, but just in case you do or someone else does.

Backup to iCloud or iTunes

and

Understanding 'Erase All Content and Settings' (how to hard reset)

I'd also make a copy of your pictures outside of iCloud/iPhone (use dropbox or something like this).. I don't trust anything anymore! (I've seen it all)

Has the my recent content been wiped out as a result too? Will it come back now that this is my first post since the site resurrection today?

EDIT: So, to answer the second question, yes, it is refilling anew. However, it's got a slightly different column format, so maybe it's just not loading a few things besides prior data but also prior formatting as well?

Yeah, in my zeal to shrink the database size, I managed to purge the table that tracks your past posts/comments (not the posts/comments themselves, just the records of what you've looked at), for which I apologize. Shouldn't have affected the formatting, though - I'll take a look at that.

So the Track (user history) DB was purged... Any chance of its being restored once all the gnomes have been hammered? Prob'ly not, hunh?

Hard to say. Looks very different but may be the lack of records.

Now I won't know how many upvotes the anti-me replies receive.

And give them to Kaz to cash in.

I wondered what was going on.

When it happened earlier this year during the never-ending snow I had a bit of a panic--I had supplies to deal with French Toast-, heat-, and electricity-based emergencies but I never considered a UHub-outage in my disaster planning. What good is a charged up iPad if I can't get the latest local news and witty commentary?

Luckily you got things fixed before I got the shakes and had to dig a tunnel to the corner store and make do with old copies of the Bulletin and City Paper.

We need stricter Voter ID Laws!
