and star wars isnt science fiction. its space opera.
Only one person
waiting in line. That's pretty amazing.
Then again, it's only the latest rehashing of a story whose presentation may have been cutting edge in 1977, but has become cheezier and cheezier (not to mention increasingly predictable) with every version. Not like they're releasing a new IPhone or something like that.
In 1977 the movie was already
In 1977 the movie was already a knock off of a Japanese film from a decade earlier. With sci-fi substituting for samurai.
Not really
Story is extremely different. Have you even seen Hidden Fortress?
do u
even lift
the story in 1977
was anything but fresh. its a classic heroes journey that borrows heavily from 1930s-1950s serials (flash gordon, etc) and draws a lot from akira kurosawa's seven samauri. a boy from humble beginnings joining forces with a wise old man and a rogue with the mission of rescuing a princess and saving a kingdom from evil was pretty ancient by the 70s.
what was innovative was the special effects and editing that went into the movie, combined with john williams excellent scoring and use of motif. add in good chemistry and humor and you have the worlds best excuse to sell toys.
Fatigue?
How many times a day do you have to switch to your left hand?
i dont have
a left hand
Not Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress.
This was a bit of misdirection by Lucas. the first Star Wars film borrowed far more extensively from a much older film -- Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky. And this debt (as far as I know) has never been acknowledged by Lucas (unlike the debt to Kurosawa). (Lucas almost certainly would have encountered Eisenstein's film in film school).
... And Prokofiev's score for Nevsky is far better than the score for Star Wars.
eh shit
ye caught me. oh well, better luck next time, me
speaking as a former film student
He may have fallen asleep during Alexander Nevsky :D
I enjoy Nevsky...
... a lot more than Star Wars or Hidden Fortress.
I'm sure
It was an 8:00 a.m. screening towards the end of the semester, and I was pretty tired anyway. One of these days, I'll revisit it, even though I do tend to shut down during Soviet propaganda....
I don't think I'd EVER...
... watch a movie at 8 AM. Not very propaganda-ish (unless you look at its particular historical context -- which I doubt many modern viewers would do).
sorry for getting wildly off topic, Adam
Yeah, it wasn't a good time.
If you're at all interested in the Soviet relationship with art, I just read this yesterday, about ballet (Swan Lake in particular). Really fascinating stuff for an amateur Russophile like me.
I spent a number of years ....
... obsessed with art in the Soviet era (prompted by my love of Shostakovich's music). This was the cultural phase that preceded my obsession with classical Japanese cinema (ongoing since 2000).
(Sorry, Adam, I will never apologize for veering offtopic).
;-)
The run on the Death Star
borrows extensively from a 1955 film called The Dam Busters. You can probably find the relevant scenes on YouTube.
(Beware, the dog's name is a racial slur and is spoken at several points, making it kinda-NSFW-ish. The Dam Busters being a true story, the filmmakers kept that detail.)

Perhaps a confused consumer thinking this is the link for the next iPhone....
Time on his hands
oof
Like, what if he has to go to the bathroom? What if he gets dehydrated?
I mean, I'll be there tonight, but I'm probably just gonna get there an hour early or so, and my boyfriend can guard my seat if I need to go to the little girls' room or get a soda or whatever.
Edited to add on Friday: we went to the 9:00 show, so we got to the theatre at about 7:45. The fellow pictured above was STILL THERE, but with a huge line behind him, of course. They would let people in 90 minutes before whichever screening they had tickets for was set to begin - so my boyf and I were able to wait inside while all those other kids waited out in the rain.
I'll be queued up for many hours myself...
...because BitTorrent is kind of slow initially when there aren't a lot of seeds.

Yeah, that's clearly shown in the very first trailer. He should have died in Empire. By which I mean the Fox TV show about a family of rap moguls.
edit: I'm with Freddie Mercury on this one; I don't like Star Wars.

So how long did you wait?
This particular "Star Wars" film
hasn't received particularly good reviews. That's what I've heard from afew people that I know personally.
Who knows how this new "Star Wars" film will do in the box office, on the long run?
eh
I saw it last night, and I thought it was lots of fun. Not a masterpiece by any means, but an enjoyable way to spend two hours.
Regarding the box office: so far, so good.
