Why did the coyote cross the road?

Around 5:30 p.m., we were heading home from the supermarket (yeah, after kickoff). We were in the right lane inbound on Washington Street, coming up on West Roxbury Parkway. There, in the left lane, just standing there, looking down the road - but not at us - was a coyote.

I slowed, flashed my brights and it ambled off across the road and up into the woods on Bellevue Hill.

I live one street off of the George wright course and drive through stony brook all the time.

We have seen coyotoes a few times right off the road and once in the street. Usually near the turtle pond / enneking / Dedham pkwy 4 stop but that is probably because we are moving slow enough there to notice them. I hear them howl at night occasionally too. There is definitely a healthy population of them round these parts.

I've seen a few right around there, too. Beautiful creatures.

... has had a pack over around Walker Pond (next to the "Alta on the Estate" apartments, across from the back of Gore Place) since at least 2002. I believe they're also along the Charles back behind Riverworks.

My neighbor across the street had two cats taken by them. We find their tracks in the snow in our garden, some winters (not yet).

Watertown PD has an ongoing warning about coyotes eating outdoor pets. If only they'd eat the river geese... Or we could trap and ship them to Brookline :)

We see them often on Walter Street heading into the Arboretum. This past Fall they visited farther into LANA than usual. Was a bit startling to see them in our yards.

As an FYI: winter is mating season for coyotes. Extra precaution should be taken by dog owners....

Stony Brook Res has at least one very healthy coyote I almost bumped into while jogging (I must have been downwind)...have seen this guy several times since: remarkable coat and about the size of a springer spaniel. Came across him at the four way stop at Enneking...just hanging out waiting to cross when he saw me on a bike and took off. Not like the scrawny ones in the LA area... a friend saw a coywolf in Brookline: now there is an interesting animal hybrid.

Windypig - you must be a neighbor of mine - my house abuts GW. Coyotes are all over the place. I even saw one crossing Rt 9 in Wellesley once. They are pretty bold.

Yes, Adam, they are very healthy - another reason not to let your cats, small dogs or children out unattended.
