Yeah, when's the last time you saw Steve Murphy wearing rouge?

Among the people welcoming BPS students to school yesterday was at-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley. Today, Pressley reports, she's getting private messages via Twitter (or "DMs" in Twitterspeak) questioning what was going on with her face:

Are ppl (incldg media) really DM'ing me re:why I wasn't wearing make-up @ #bps visits yesterday? Ridic. Ask my colleagues why they never do.

I find it bizarre that people are so interested in the cosmetic appearance of elected officials. If someone looks unwell, then I can see expressing concern. Honestly, people must have nothing better to do if they are contacting our female elected officials about their mascara or eye shadow or lack thereof. What a bunch of sad, shallow, boring people.

Ayanna,

You could look like death warmed over, and I wouldn't care. As long as you keep doing your job to your best ability.

Thanks,

It's Twitter. It's mostly fake accounts. It's full of trolls. It's not a news source. If someone from the media actually asked her about makeup she should tell us who so they can be taught a lesson in what journalism is. It's a ridiculous and petty question and probably not accurate.

But I distinctly recall starting to read a writeup in either the Globe or the Times a number of years back on Starchitect Zaha Hadid where the descriptors included how she "stuffed her feet into her shoes". I couldn't stomach reading any more of it, and because that is exactly how one would describe any of her male counterparts. *eyeroll*

Reminds me of a clip of Hillary Clinton being interviewed by a journalist who asked her who her designer was. She hesitated and said, "Dress designer?" The journalist said yes. She replied, "Would you ask me that question if I were a man?" The journalist said no. End of conversation.

HRC press agent publishes who her designer is when they want you to know. Where the question was asked is the important factor. I think you are referring to the "towninterview" event and that was a case of bad timing by the moderator. If fashion wasn't a part of her campaign she shouldn't be selling these... https://shop.hillaryclinton.com/products/the-everyday-pantsuit-tee

In this case we are talking about unsolicited and unwarranted accusations aimed to make someone feel bad.

Here is an interesting link... http://www.racked.com/2015/4/21/8433603/hillary-clinton-fashion-clothes-...

Men aren't socially conditioned to think that their faces are unacceptable without makeup, or that their clothes are anything they have to put any particular thought into.

Many male politicians wear makeup. All are groomed. Ronnie's red cheeks weren't from jellybeans.

Men who regularly appear on television may indeed wear foundation. Different thing from a full face of makeup, however - and besides, I'm not talking about people on TV. Do you think the male city councilors serving with Ayanna Pressley regularly wear makeup? Do you think the female city councilors regularly do not wear makeup?

I don't know what their grooming habits are but it's their prerogative. You can still dress any way you like. I didn't read that any male city councilors were commenting on her makeup. Men get questioned about appearances all the time. Nobody wears a wool suit and tie in August during a heat wave unless they are trying to impress someone. City counselors are public people and attempt to look their best in public. It's up to the individual to decide what that means. Councilor Ayanna Pressley is an adult and decides when to wear makeup. I don't particularly enjoy shaving every day but I do. That's my choice because that's what I think makes me look the way I want people to see me. You can blame social conditioning for my shaving and her making a choice when to wear makeup but she's still an adult making a choice. Social conditioning isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I find it interesting that you jumped over the social conditioning part of Madame Tucker's argument, which is honestly the entire crux of the problem with Ayanna Pressley being questioned.

I just don't agree with it entirely. I think there is more to makeup wearing than social conditioning. I think there are a lot of other factors. Birds have been developing lovely plumage not because of social conditioning but because of genetic mutations and while I don't entirely discount society playing a role I think there is a deeper undercurrent of human behavior that is somewhat out of our control. When makeup first came out it was shunned by polite society then it was embraced wildly and then bounced between the two for a while. I feel like with today's generation of enlightened individual there is a lot more choice and less pressure to look a certain way.

I'll go back and read those links though as soon as I get home. Hopefully all of this is addressed in one of them.

If the Mayor attends an event in the buff instead of his usual 3-piece suit, is it wrong to ask why the emperor is wearing no clothes?
