Did they post any info about the serial number on it? Should either be on the headstock, or there might be a stamp on the neck heel. It's a bummer...those go for well over a grand, brand new.

Those things are tonally and playability -wise nice. People don't realize the sentimental value in an instrument :( my jsm1000 is my baby!!!

Assuming the person who stole it doesn't want to keep it for themselves, they will try to sell it to a music store. Or possibly a pawn shop, though they pay next to nothing. This is where the serial number comes in. Check around music stores and pawn shops to see if anything came in with the specific serial number. And dealers are very wary of instruments with the serial number scratched off. Also check Ebay and Craigslist.

How did the owner "lose" it? Or was he/she robbed at gun- or knife-point? Inquiring minds want to know.

Meanwhile, I hope law enforcement has notified all the music stores and pawnshops in the area. I know there was a waiting period about twenty years ago when my ex wanted to sell his bass --so the store staff could check it against records of stolen items-- but I don't know if stores still do that.

That seems to be the policy at Guitar Center. I think it's for all used gear, but they certainly do it for pedals.

Before Guitar Center and the like can sell second-hand instruments.

It happens:

Yo-Yo Ma leaves $2.5 million Stradivari cello in a yellow cab

Stradivarius violin left on subway in Bern, Switzerland

Both stories ended happily, with the wayward instruments returned to their owners.

to any untrained eye, thats going to look the same as the thousands and thousands of other strats that are in the area.

...serial numbers are for.

except anybody that sees this is basically looking for any guitar that looks remotely similar. that particular look is stupidly popular, to the point where its like asking the average person to BOLO for "a black sedan"

my interest level in getting the police called on me for having said "black sedan" is nil

I'm only nitpicking here. It's the most ubiquitous style, only rivaled by the Les Paul, or maybe the Telecaster.

The 80's are back people. How soon before NO RADIO signs start appearing in cars again? I'm buying a pair of Compliments, and pair of White with Green Stripes Shelltoes, and a Champion Sweatshirt post haste.
