Too bad this gets demoed in the not too distant future!

Not sure if this is better or worse than the trophies.

It's courteous to return books, but the reason these free libraries work is that for most paperbacks, the secondary market value is a dollar or less, and lots of people have too many books that they're looking to get rid of. They're available everywhere and they're basically free: putting them out at a free library allows them to get a little more use before the end up in the recycle bin.

I have 4 more boxes of trophies patiently waiting for a home. The Irish step-dancing trophies are particularly fetching and deserve to be on display. Bring back the shelves!

The eastbound side (next to the river) or the westbound (towards-Kendall) side?

from the Globe article:

Jacquelyn Goddard, a spokeswoman from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the state agency undertaking the bridge overhaul, said the books were removed because they were on a wall where demolition is scheduled to occur.

“The books have been preserved. They were not discarded,” she said in an e-mail.

Weird. Why would they board up the shelves if the wall was going to be demolished? Why not remove the shelves? Seems like an odd response.

The trophy case and now the library were built off of/used some structural braces for that soon-to-be-demolished wall.
