The Guy from Boston sues a radio station from Boston

Ligotti

Joe Ligotti, who's made a career out of being a cigar-chomping loudmouth, is suing WMEX over the way he says he was secretly fired last year.

WMEX hired the Guy from Boston away from a weekend slot on WTKK last June, had him do the station's morning drive show, then ditched him a little more than a month later.

In a lawsuit filed last week in US District Court in Boston, Ligotti says WMEX gave him a three-year contract with an annual salary of $70,000 plus a cut of advertising revnue. But he charges the station's owners really only wanted his name to boost ratings for a bit as they tried to sell the station.

He alleges that after taking him off the air, the station made up stories about him being out for unspecified medical reasons or vacation and kept using his name and likeness to promote its morning show in an attempt to keep its ratings up. He charges station owners made up stories that he "engaged in sexual harassment."

These wrongful acts have proximately caused irreparable injury to Ligotti, including dilution of goodwill, confusion to the public, injury to Ligotti’s reputation and diminution in the value of THE GUY FROM BOSTON mark.

And if that weren't enough, WMEX still hasn't paid him all the salary, sick and bonus time and commissions it owes him, he charges.

Ligotti is seeking a full three years' worth of salary, sick and vacation time for the second and third years of his contract, commissions on ads that came in because of him, royalties based on the use of his likeness, "compensatory and multiple damages" and lawyers' fees. He also asks a judge to order WMEX to "correct any and all false statements issued against Ligotti or his trademark THE GUY FROM BOSTON."

Angry, loudmouthed blowhard is not something anyone wants to hear on their drive to work.

We get enough of that crap at work.

It seems like he did have a contract, and might deserve compensation accordingly.

Whatever your opinion of something, contracts still matter.

He was on the tonight show with Jay Leno one time and the Radio execs thought this guy was going to be a major star in Boston at the time , he made countless YouTube videos mostly on and about republican views, they were kind of funny at the beginning, but have worn off over time, and people and the radio execs got tired of it.

But can you imagine what your day must be like if you have to go to work and listen to this obese idiot. Then follow him with fingernails-on-a-chalkboard-voice Michelle McPhee. Then to top off the day, you have to sit thru an evening of Michael Savage?

God bless the back of house staff at WMEX.

Hard to believe anyone would offer this buffoon $70k a year, except Massport where I believe he previously drove a snow plow. I recall watching a moment of his youtube videos years ago and it was mostly yelling, screaming and F-bombs while chomping the cigar. I clicked it right off. If he passes as Boston radio "talent" these days, Jerry Williams and Gene Burns are rolling in their graves.

It doesn't appear to me he actually has his own youtube channel.Am I just not finding it? Just seems odd since this whole guy is about selling an image.

I often wondered if The Guy From Boston is related to the controversial Hingham District Court Clerk by the same name.

That is his father, Joe Sr.

He is similar to that annoying arrogant local loudmouth who does some fishing show where he wears clerics jersey

He's nothing like Charlie Moore. Charlie is a good guy and is fun to watch. I watched him go fishing with Big Papi once. It was mesmerizing.

Or whatever you hold dear

Don't go down the wormhole and find this guy's FB page or anything else.
Trust me, I did.

Nothing even worth ridiculing. Utter banality.

This is the guy that makes people yell "Chowdah!" at you when you tell them you're from Boston.

Nuke it from orbit. It the only way to be safe.

I, too, had somehow missed this cultural phenomenon, until reading about him here. His shtick seems awfully similar to that of a guy who styled himself as "The Kid from Brooklyn" and started posting to YouTube about 10 yrs. ago. I believe he died recently. Here's one of his classics:
