May Day, Cambridge style

May Day in 90 Seconds

Scotirish gives us an overview of the day's festivities along the Charles.

One cannot help but also be impressed by the number of portable toilets (although they were probably there for the Walk for Hunger).

I used to regularly go to these events every May 1 at dawn - sometimes just staying up all night and heading over there when the sun came up.

I should dig up some of the photos I took there from ~1980. I bet a lot of the same people are still there - plus their children - and grandchildren.

The port-a-potties were in fact there for Walk for Hunger, yes. If only I'd known about it beforehand, I might've downed a cup of coffee or two prior to heading out to the festivities. At past May Days, you had to wait 'til the movable feast made its way to the plaza at Dunster and Mass. Ave. so you could duck into the Au Bon Pain and use their facilities, or perhaps find a way into the Malkin Athletic Center. Still, it's always been a worthwhile inconvenience.
