Police get new ice-cream truck
Boston Police rolled out their new Operation Hoodsie Cup truck in Roxbury yesterday.
Police officers had distributed 120,000 Hoodsie cups from the old truck since it joined the force in 2010.
In a statement, Police Commissioner William Evans said:
If you had told me 30 years ago that the Boston Police Department would have an ice cream truck as part of its patrol force and my officers would be handing out Hoodie Cups … I would've said you were crazy. But, I absolutely love the new truck and everything this program represents. The good will it generates between my officers and our city's young people is undeniable and nothing short of remarkable and my only regret is that I wish we had started doing this 30 years ago.
WBZ reports the Boston Police Foundation covered the $89,000 cost of the truck and that HP Hood is continuing to donate Hoodsie cups for it.

I suppose someone will crap on this because...this is the Internet and that's what it's all about, but it's good to see the BPD continue to invest in community policing efforts. Building relationships with kids is important to building better attitudes towards the police in the long run (especially if you ensure that police behave in a positive way with these kids once they're a bit older as well). The ice cream truck also serves as good public relations which is a bit dangerous. Community policing and public relations should not get confused too much. One is about perceptions and the other is about actual relationships that impact the police's work. And of course what a coup for Hood!
you probably shouldn't lead a
you probably shouldn't lead a positive comment with a negative statement. The positive nature of the comment is overshadowed by the negative introduction. It could make people not want to continue reading the comment.
Good Point!
While you make an interesting statement, you might want to phrase your first sentence with positive phrasing so that people keep reading your comment and don't assume you're being unjustly pedantic.
Ok, here's your problem:
By using an exclamation point in your title, you sounded really excited at first. Then, the first statement in your comment ended up being a suggestion on improvement. That just made me feel conflicted. Perhaps next time, choose one emotion and roll with it. Don't sound so positive, then let down the reader! The comment is yours, don't be afraid to own it!
what?
Sorry I stopped reading this thread back at the "crap on it" comment...even though I wrote it. There's just so much negativity in the world, we can't deal with it.
Shut up! Don't speak for us!
See, I told you. We are legion. We are bored.
no we're not.
Yeah, sorry.
I tried to build on what I thought was a joke, on the comment above mine. I failed.
I know this is the internet, and we're not supposed to apologize or admit we messed up, but I'm doing both.
Carry on...
never!
Aw c'mon!
Not a Cup for Hood?
erm....
Two cops and a (Hoodise) cup?
waugh!
gah
yesterday I struggled with getting a Fozzie Bear image in a response.
This morning, non-caffeinated, I (finally) picked up what you're putting down.
(which I've never seen and you can't make me)
wakka wakka
If it weren't for bad jokes, I'd have none at all.
I'm sure it can be written
I'm sure it can be written into the script of a Batman movie.
To Protect and Soft Serve.
To Protect and Soft Serve.
A good program...but...
I like the idea of building better relationships between the police and the city's kids - but $89,000 for an ice cream truck? I would have preferred they hire 2 new rookie cops to protect and serve and then find a different (less expensive) way to distribute the free ice cream to the kids.
Not paid for by the city.
Not paid for with public money, which it says above, in words.
Also, the rookie salary is $49k. Add benefits (health, pension & life insurance have got to be close to 30k) to that and I imagine you're above 80k.
But I want to be mad!

Or just lease an ice cream truck
How much would it cost to lease an actual ice cream truck for a year, use advertising clings or whatever to make it a police dept ice cream truck, and use that instead of dropping 89 large on a retrofitted minivan.
Whatevs. It's private/charity money, and they're doing good work. I wish them delicious success.
um
Do you think that it only costs that much to hire two cops, or that the ice cream truck has a shelf life of one year?
$89k does seem like a lot,
for a vehicle that has a base MSRP of $32k. I guess all those flashing lights and ice cream coolers are pretty expensive. Anyway, as other have said, we're not paying for it, so the price doesn't really matter.
Reefers are expensive, but
Reefers are expensive, but they are not that expensive.
Wait, is that what they're distributing?!
Does anyone have a schedule of the truck's appearances? Asking for a friend.
It is sad that ice cream
It is sad that ice cream crime is so rampant in our society. Look them up I say.
Does it play ice cream truck tunes or police siren?
I much prefer the chimes from ice cream trucks.
90k? WTF?
90k? WTF?
Can get a reefer truck for an extra 10k. (Yes I get that it was not funded by the city)

This is nice
I appreciate Boston Police's efforts to use community policing methods. For those concerned that someone is going to turn this good thing around and make it negative, please consider that there is a valid reason for these kinds of feelings. These feelings are elucidated in the following link, and I hope readers will consider them before disagreeing with me.. https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2015/05/29/police-dont-...
