Roslindale's main source of large ceramic animals closing forever

Jerusalme Trading in Roslindale is closing

There's a new store-closing sign on the front of Jersusalem Trading on Poplar Street, which was the square's only source for beds and unusual living-room accoutrements. Anybody know what's taking its place?

I never went in there but sad to see a business close though! Wish them the best for their next venture or stage in life.

Literally two independent coffee shops have opening in town in the past two months.

As Vaughn said, we are good on coffee shops. A Trader Joe's would be great, though, especially if it stuck mostly with dry goods, leaving fresh produce to our existing retailers.

A trader joes would be SO AWESOME. But they are opening one up in Somerville soon, and that's a chain that expands very, very slowly and only after a tonnnnn of market research.

just a bizarre assortment of stuff - really odd styles that might have worked in the 1970s...

that said - i'm holding out for a bank, hair/nail place, or anything that sucks the life out of the square. As long as we don't fix the horrible high-speed anti-pedestrian street design around adam's park we should be ok.

Nothing scheduled to take its place as of now.

Probably an ill-conceived, messy store selling items that few people want or need. That seems to be the MO for a lot of the stores in that block.

It's really sad how many places have closed since we moved here just a few years ago. Personally I'd rather see an active business, even if it's not something I want or need to buy, than having landlords jack up rent in anticipating of gentrification that isn't coming until transit and the Washington Corridor get fixed and shut down, empty buildings. At least it's a little foot traffic and tax revenue.

The people celebrating this on the Rozzie FB group because this place wasn't "quirky" - aka, hipster artisanal small business locally grown blah blah blah - are gross. Sorry that undesirables have some places they like to shop in your JP-Lite Dream Square. Then again, I like and use the Petco, and appreciate the refurb of the building that they did, so I guess I'm just not a quirky person.

A number of place have also opened in the past few years. Maintaining a neighborhood business district is always a challenge.

I don't know how long you've lived in Rozzie, but I've been here for twenty years, and the business district has had new stores open, some close, some open, etc. It's the creative destruction described by Adam Smith, and believe it or not, healthy for the overall economy of the Square because it stimulates variety.

Not every idea for a new business is going to be the next Tony's Market. There are other good ideas out there, but we can't always know which one will succeed, so the process requires a bit of messiness. Imagine Roslindale with no empty store fronts. Then somebody has a great idea to open a cheese shop. He's going to Hyde Park or somewhere else with a lower occupancy rate. That's our loss, which is why a certain percentage of empty stores is a good thing. Without it, we stagnate.

One if the many fine things about Roslindale Square is that the wine and cheese shops are right next to each other.

We're getting another convenience store in the renovated space across from Staples, Sam's Food Stores. For when you're caught between the Tedeschi's and the Roslindale Market by Healy field I guess and need a bag of cheetos or a gallon of milk.

Free market, etc... but this is the kind of chain we don't need more of if anything. Or I guess we do if more are opening. IDK.

That's what Roslindale is becoming famous for, so another good one would be welcome. That's a nice big space where you could also have outdoor seating facing the park. Could be very nice.

When I was a child, that store was what today would be called a predecessor to a dollar store and I suppose quite similar to what's there now. It was one of those odd places where you could find most anything in the Square. Ab fab corn muffins at Donna' s Bakery; paper and paint at Wallpaper CIty; Middle Eastern breads and foods at Droubi's; school uniforms and kids clothes at Kiddie Land; fabulous photography at Dave Johnson's Studio, now a market, a few doors down from Jerusaleam, Claus' Deli, Kennedy's,Cuddy's Donuts (similar to Anna's in WR), Kresges'...I could go on and on. BTW, my photo was often in the photographer's window as I was one of his favorite sitters...his niece! LOL

Times, tastes and fortunes change, but it's nice to see that discussions of what should be in the Square don't.
