Maura Johnston found an interesting Craigslist listing for apartments available 9/1/17:
Location:
Our Harvard Avenue units are located between Brighton Avenue and Cambridge Street. Just a half block away you will find Store 24, Herrells Ice Cream, The Kells, Harpers Ferry, Blanchards, Big City, and Redneck's Pizza. These apartments truly are in the middle of everything.

I want to live in this past
It always seems better than the present, or the unknown future.
Plus, HERRELL'S ! ! ! !
But I'd actually much rather live here and now, with my more enlightened, compassionate, curious, calm & wise self, than in that anxious, stuffy, fractured, depressed mind from the past.
And definitely not in Allston.......
Time machine
Price as well assuming it's for the one bedroom unit, though more likely "starting at" $1400 for a basement studio with no windows.
Not 2005 Rent
At $1,400, it's definitely 2017.
Not 1985, either
Then they would be clean, fast, tight and familiar with the local scene.
They forgot Bravo.
They forgot Bravo.
Tavern replaced the Kells.
Tedeschi replaced Store 24
Patron's replaced Big City.
Some asian food place replaced Red Necks.
Brighton Music Hall replaced Harper's.
Blanchards is still there, but everyone who knew anything is gone.
I don't remember Herrells Ice Cream though.
Herrell's was replace by the
Herrell's was replaced by the Allston Cafe which was then replaced by the Refuge Cafe. I think Refuge Cafe might have also closed, but I'm not sure about that. I try to steer clear of Allston these days.
Now I'm thinking about old
Now I'm thinking about old Comm Ave haunts like the El Phoenix Room, Our House, and the Armadillo Cafe. I had a very strong constitution in those days.
Refuge is alive and well
Ate there yesterday.
Who saved Refuge?
This UHub story from last fall featured a big sign saying Refuge was to "close permanently as of September 30".
Whitehorse Tavern
Used to be a very grungy bar called Geraldo's. The kind of bar that only had small windows at the top.
Next to Herrell's there was a cafeteria style restaurant called "Le Cafeteria".
Diskovery was further up the block - a cool book and record store with a cool black cat that was joined by a younger black and white cat later.
There was also Viet Hong, great place to eat.
There was Kinvara Pub, but I don't actually remember where it was.
Amvets is now a "Hot Pot" restaurant.
Antique Revival is a tattoo parlor.
There was an Allston Beat.
Bunratty's became Local 186 became the Wonder Bar.
Harvest Coop is an empty storefront on Cambridge street.
Flyrabbit was a very cool and weird store on Harvard Ave.
Grecian Yearning was the local greasy spoon.
I even remember when the Allston Branch library was just an abandoned brick building on North Harvard street.
I don't care what anyone says, I LOVED Allston when I lived there and I still miss it to this day.
lol I went on a "date" to
lol I went on a "date" to Gerlando's once. I do miss Herrell's breakfast sandwiches made with the espresso steamer.
Whitehorse Tavern - Old Ad For Apt.
I've lived here all my life. There was NEVER a library on North Harvard St. ! The Allston Branch was on Harvard Ave near Glenville Ave. in that office building where there was a Shawmut or First Nat'l Bank and Bailey's Drug store was on the corner.
The library was on the 2nd floor. Our teachers at Taft had us go there because it was on our way back home to Allston. It was a poor excuse for a library.
My mother went to a brick elementary school called the Harvard School in the 1920s. It was located around #230 No. Harvard St. That was long gone during my time and I don't remember it. It's at the present location of Alexander's house (diagonally across from Rockland Trust-formerly People Bank)
There is a library on No. Harvard St. NOW. On the site of Al McNamara's house ( the concrete company).
They forgot Bravo-Old Ad for Apt.
Go back further and Donovan Drug was on the corner where Herrells' was on.
Cole's Drug across the street where Riley Roast Beef was.
Boston Paint Supply on the corner where Blanchard's Liquors is.
Brighton 5 Cent Savings Bank where Tedeschi's/Store 24/whatever store is there now.
Craigslist scam?
Sounds to me like one of those bogus listings aimed at college students. I hope no one gets suckered into paying for this sight unseen only to show up and find out that the person listing the apartment is not the owner/landlord and therefore they are not only out the money, they have no place to live.
It's probably not that bad of a scam
I rented in Allston for years, usually they're just fishing for volume contacts for their rental agency. They'll send you an out-of-touch survey and then maybe try to half-heartedly show you an apartment that they're trying to move to get a lease signed on, but has nothing to do with what you asked for. Or they'll send you a survey and won't get back to you at all, except maybe a few years later when they've added you to their Constant Contact listing blast.
Real estate is inherently scammy, I had several good apartments in the Allston-Brighton area, but finding them was a nightmare of sketchiness.
It's not that great on the
It's not that great on the other side either. Good Agents who treat YOUR potential customers well is hard too.
I have been on both sides. Happy enough with my current agent, and glad to not be looking for appartments any more.
Its a mess here though.
OK, but,
Is it near a Caldor or Bradlees?
it's actually across the
it's actually across the street from woolworth's
Ah, a true Brighton native...
A heart you both for remembering Caldor's and Woolworth's...
That's it, I need a drink!
Meet me at Father's First.
