City hopes to crowdsource the fight against trash dumpers in revamped urban wild
By adamg on Thu, 09/21/2017 - 12:07pm
The Bulletin reports on the unwrapping of Boston Park and Rec's plans for Sherrin Woods on the Roslindale/Hyde Park line that include new trails and a camera system to catch the sort of miscreants who now routinely dump trash there.
Part of the camera system will include a Web site residents can call up to do some online monitoring so that they can alert the city when dumpers are skulking about.

Sounds like a neat idea. The thought of being able to help catch these turds who go to parks just to dump trash is enticing. I wish they would do this in Franklin Park to catch dirt bike riders and trash dumpers.
I just noticed today
that they've done a ton of brush clearing near the stadium which is great, but sadly it exposes a TON of trash that's been partly hidden--beer cars and cases, plastic bags ad nauseam, and a lot of other gross stuff.
Why the dumping?
This city has one of the most robust, and dare I say generous, trash pickup services of anywhere I've ever known. No calling for "bulk trash pickup", just leave your enormous sofa sectional on the curb and if it's still there when the truck goes by they'll fit it in. Have specialty items like computer monitors? Just fill out a 10 second online form and they will get picked up. Have hazardous chemicals? The city has multiple hazardous waste collections per year.
With all that, why in God's name would you need to dump your freaking garbage in an urban wild or park?
Why? Because you're a piece
Why? Because you're a piece of shit.
Out of towners?
Out of towners?
Possibly
Don't know if it's still happening, but Milton residents used to drive their trash into Hyde Park and Roslindale rather than pay for that town's per-bag disposal fees.
Only reason it might not be out-of-towners, who even knows about Sherrin Woods except people who live near it? It's not exactly on a main road.
Who else would know?
Contractors, that's who. They know everywhere.
I am hoping that this works out. From what I've seen on the edges of the woods (and I can proudly say that I was in fact in the urban wild today) the dumpers appear to be very lazy, so cameras along Austin and Sherrin should help out.

I'm certainly no fan of illegal dumping. And I know there's no expectation of privacy in a public space. But it still creeps me out for the government to install cameras pointed at a public space that can be monitored by anyone.
If I go for a walk in the woods, I don't want to worry about who might be watching me who I can't see.

I'm the bulletin reporter for the Sherrin woods story. The camera system is only a proposal at the moment.
However
If the dumpers think there are cameras, maybe they won't dump.
