A roving UHub photographer was kind of astounded, and a bit alarmed, at the size of the icicles hanging off on building in Hancock Village on the West Roxbury/Brookline line.

Looks like the residents on the second floor are trying to melt the things by keeping their window wide open -when you are a landlord who pays the heating bills, you notice these kind of things right away!.

There's steam heat or something similar with building-wide controls, and that room is 90° without the window open.

Used to live there and it's this exactly. I think the thermostats in the units are just for show.

I lived there for several years until I was fed up with roof, wall and floor leaks every winter. The upstairs was 15 degrees hotter than downstairs so I had to choose where I wanted to be comfortable and yeah, I did often leave upstairs windows open to deal with the 85+ temps. Plus, there is little attic insulation so these icicles form immediately.
After several years of those conditions, believe me - I would have LOVED to have the landlord pay attention!
Icicles everywhere!
