Does Kevin Cullen still smell the Marathon explosions?

WEEI's Kirk Minihane yesterday ripped into Kevin Cullen for two bombing-related columns - one over the weekend, the other a couple days after the bombings. In the first column, he wrote that Martin Richard's father was a runner in the race; in the second, he made it sound like he was at the scene at the time of the explosions.

David Wade reports the Globe is now investigating Cullen's writing on the topic.

So,how is this different than any other story in the Glob???

Just re-name the paper "The Barnicle Times" and let Jason Blair be the editor...

Minidick and his pal the Cancer Kazoo™ think they have the moral high ground here. Cullen may be an old school Boston idiot, but his accusers are two of the biggest racist scumbags to come down the Pike. Their indignation is not fueled by some sense of enforcing journalistic integrity, it is merely the actions of two butthurt morons against an outlet that has shown more than once that EEI is a cesspool of misgyny and racism and caused them to lose advertisers and forced them to shut down for a day in the weakest bit of spin I've ever seen.

Ask Don Yee. Ask Adam Jones. Ask Erin Andrews. Ask Jemele Hill.

Then see how many times a week that these two scumbags appear outside their little bubble of testosterone fueled racist morons on any national sports outlet and then ask why.

and their motives, but it looks like Cullen is in the wrong here. I always got the sense he was "embellishing" the stories in his columns, just like Barnicle, and now It looks like my suspicions were true.

The Globe's version of Howie Carr, only just as dumb and not as racist? I could care less about that fool. I do care about those two nitwits and their not so righteous indignation.

Did he do it? How often. I read he got his info from the same place Barnicle did, in a BPD bar.

Your rage issues know no bounds. This is a serious allegation against Cullen and deserves serious discussion. Don’t sideshow it with a layup attack against two easy targets.

Minihane sucks. He makes WEEI unlistenable, unless you're the sort of shit stain who can listen to hateful bigots spewing bigotry and have no problem with it.

Ok, he may be a waste of skin, but thoughts on the Cullen lies?

There was a ton of bad information coming out in the hours and days after the bombings. Remember when all the media were down at the federal courthouse on Day Two or Three because they thought someone was in custody? A columnist recounting the inaccurate story that someone gave him under those circumstances isn't dishonesty, it's an understandable consequence of total chaos.

Cullen never said he was there for the bombings. From what I can see, he doesn't even imply it. He saw what we all saw, because we were all glued to TV screens where it was happening before our eyes and repeated over and over afterward. I trust that he was there later, like a million other reporters, and if he says he could still smell smoke hours after two bombs went off then I have no reason to doubt him. I mean, what reason is there to take Minehan's word that he couldn't?

He said he heard the wails of one of the victims
He lies

But if you watch the full clip of the HBO documentary they cite on the "death wail" claim,Cullen is talking about videos and evidence shown in court. It is totally disclosed. I was there in court. The govt. showed videos of the victims, including Krystle Cambell's final moments screaming. It was awful.

Go do a little research. The audio and writing is out there. How can he say the sound of Krystle Campbell's death wail cut through him when he said previously that he was about a mile away when the bombs went off? That's just one example. There are many, many more.

Krystle babysat my daughter and was with people who also live in the neighborhood.

Never heard anything about a "death wail". I don't think she even had a chance to scream.

I never thought I would agree with Minihane on anything as I think he is an idiot but he is 100% correct here. Cullen writes that his firefighter friend "Steve" rescued Jane Richard and carried her to the ambulance - absolutely untrue. She was helped by Matt Patterson who says he has never spoken to Cullen. Cullen did an interview with the BBC a couple days after the bombing crying and talking about how Martin Richard went out to hug his dad at the end of the race but returned to where he was as his father went to register his time at the finish just before the bombs went off. You haven't had to register your time in 20 years. You can't run out to greet people as they finish. None of this happened and Cullen is trading on the Richard's grief to act like he was part of the story. He is a total fraud and a even bigger scumbag.

I've seen videos of him talking about being there. There is a difference between embellishing and lying. Cullen is delusional!

I just went back and reread the two columns by Cullen and Minihane's commentary. Cullen's writings are columns - commentary and color. I did not see anything to be outraged about. Minihane's statements are the kind of thing when you see it on your shoe you make a disgusted face and try to scrape as much off as possible.

Is it true Cullen wrote columns citing his own first hand experience when it was actually based on what other people told him they experienced? If true it seems like a fundamentally dishonest frame of reference.

And if true that he got his material sometimes in a BPD bar, the same method was used by Mike Barnicle and it turned out to be his undoing at the Globe. Of course there's always room for a disgraced columnist on panels of cable tv shows.

I like Cullen's columns but he can't operate dishonestly if that's what he doing. The thing I like about Mike Barnicle is he knows how to say what he wants to say without triggering Joe Scarborough.

It seems to me the most relevant point in AGs post is David Wade's report that the Globe is in fact reviewing Cullen's reporting, in response to the WEEI commentary.

Talk to any first responder that was at the Marathon event as it unfolded. They know who was there and who is full of shit. I have a "friend" that copes with his experience by talking about himself in the third person as one of the self promoting frauds. It's amusing for a minute until you realize how profoundly it bothers him and the others he is joking with. These people stay silent but do keep a running list of bullshit award winners.

The first article has a factual error, yes, and which was never corrected. But he's clear that he's printing hearsay - what firefighters told him about the Richard family. There's no intent there, and given how fast everything was happening, I'm not surprised that no one ever noticed a bad fact in one column. I'm guessing there are others, in the Globe and plenty of other outlets, if people were to dig them up.

The other one, it's vague. Cullen wasn't at the bombings, but did he go to Boylston afterwards? Or does he just imagine he knows what it must have smelled like?

He also said in this years article he just happen to drive by Jane Richard who was crossing the street after working for an Adams Village store. Bull. Shit. A) the odds of that are one in a million, and B) she's 12, she's not working anywhere.

He also said in a BBC interview after the bombing he knew Sean Collier from his time working IT for the Somerville PD. Huh? How on earth would a Boston Globe columnist come in contact with an IT guy for the Somerville PD? Bull. Shit.

NEW: Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen now on leave after WEEI accusations that the writer embellished or fabricated stories about the Boston Marathon bombings.

We'd be remiss if we didn't welcome back Spanish-American War veteran Peter Lucas to the Herald stable of columnists. He'll supplement Joe Fitz in the "Angry Grampy" role, albeit with fewer quotes from Celtics who played 50 years ago.

Man, I like his writing and I know people that are friendly with him and speak very highly of him.

Fun story: my dad was an editor at the Globe and I read it every day in the 80’s.

I went to public schools.

My friend and I were reading a Barnicle column where he was “quoting” black kids from the corner but he was using Ebonics that I’d never heard in my life.
This was like 85.

I told my friend ( from parochial school) that Barnicle was full of shit and was never on a street corner in his life.

Proven right years later
