Looking at the stats, UHub visits are up by a fair amount today, but overall not by a number that should've brought the site to its knees. The problem was a concentrated burst of visits between 2 and 3 p.m. - which makes sense because that's when news about all the flooding was breaking - it's just that, alas, the server isn't designed for big bursts like that (the server has a sort of gauge for how busy it is; normally, it's between 0.70 and 1.50 - when I logged in to see why the site was so slow, it was up past 30). Longer term, I should look at alternate server architectures designed to handle such things, but in the short term, it just doesn't happen that often and there are other things I still need to work on first (like getting https working).
