Revere bank robber tried to bribe T bus driver to drive him to Dorchester, but she said no, feds say
After making off with more than $13,000 from a Bell Circle bank in August, a man up from New York hopped on a T bus. Being a New Yorker, of course, he didn't have a CharlieCard, so he offered to pay the driver with one of the $100 bills he'd just gotten, according to federal officials. And when that didn't work, he offered her $500 for a little side trip down to Dorchester, they allege.
David Hattersly, 45, was charged in federal court yesterday with the robbery - separate from a Medford bank robbery four days earlier for which he faces state charges. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison on the federal charge of armed bank robbery, the US Attorney's office reports.
According to an affidavit by an FBI agent on the case, Hattersly walked into the Bell Circle Bank of America branch around 1:25 p.m. on Aug. 19 and pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at a teller - it turned out to be a BB gun - and gave her a note that read:
THIS IS A ROBBERY, I HAVE A GUN. THE QUICKER YOU COMPLY NOBODY GETS HURT. HAND ME ALL THE 100'S, 50'S 20'S OUT OF YOUR DRAWER. NO DYE PACKS THE FBI WILL SORT IT OUT LATER DONT BE A HERO BECAUSE I WILL KILL SOMEBODY. IF I HAVE TO !!! & THE BLOOD WILL BE ON YOUR HANDS.
The teller got money out of her drawer, gave it to Hattersly and he left - with $13,100 in currency, the affidavit says.
Hattersly then ran across American Legion Highway and got on an MBTA bus on Beach Street - possibly a 117 - and offered the driver $100 for the fare, the affidavit continues:
The bus driver then stated that this individual then offered the bus driver if she, the bus driver, would drive the individual to Dorchester. The bus driver stated that the individual exited the bus in the vicinity of Broadway and Yeamans Streets in Revere.
Not long after, the affidavit says, a woman called 911 from near there to report a guy showed up in her back yard - while her children were playing there - and that when she went out to confront him, he was holding "a large sum of cash" and what appeared to be a black handgun:
The homeowner stated that the robber said, in substance, he had just robbed a bank and he needed a ride to Dorchester. The homeowner then entered her residence, called the police and returned to the backyard and observed the robber counting the large sum of cash.
When police arrived, they found Hattersly still in the backyard, just sitting on the grass with a lot of cash. They arrested him and collected $6,100 from the grass. They found another $6,300 on him during booking at the police station, the affidavit says.
Not mentioned in the affidavit is the woman local police say accompanied Hattersly during the robbery of an East Cambridge Savings Bank branch on Aug. 14 - and who may have had a Lyft driver take her to Bell Circle to rendezvous with him after the Revere robbery.
Innocent, etc.

What a schmuck.
This guy has much to learn in the bank robbing business ...
Those nouveau riche, always
Those nouveau riche, always waving cash around trying to buy their way through life.
A lesson that his dad never taught him
Once, as a child, my dad paid me a small sum for doing some chores. I proceeded to count the payment in front of him and was quickly told that it was rude to count money in front of a trusted source like him. Point taken. This guy never learned bank robbery 101: Don't stop to count your money!
And make sure you can get away
For example, if you're planning to use the bus, make sure there's money on your CharlieCard.
Not even a bicycle
Depending on ride-sharing services for your getaway vehicle is ludicrous.
