Man charged with Esplanade scissor stabbing sent for evaluation

Updated.

A Boston Municipal Court judge today ordered Luis Olivo, 37, sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation before he is arraigned for allegedly stabbing and beating a woman on the Esplanade Friday afternoon, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Olivo, with addresses in both Boston and Everett, is now scheduled for arraignment on July 19, the DA's office reports.

State Police report on the attack:

Evidence suggests he rushed the victim, stabbed her in the head with a pair of scissors, tackled her to the ground on the bridge, and struck her.

As troopers converged on the area, witnesses pointed them in the direction Olivo allegedly ran - off the Esplanade and down Dartmouth Street - where a trooper used a taser to subdue him at Commonwealth Avenue, State Police say.

The scissors believed used in the stabbing were recovered.

Olivo was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault and battery, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Innocent, etc.

So glad that the Women survived the attack from this dirtbag. Can't even go for an afternoon jog. Adam, I'd be interested to see this loser's record. Maybe you can follow this case.

Also, people have a right to defend themselves - maybe next time (and there will be a next time), the victim will be able to even the score.

How about cooling it with the terms "dirtbag" and "loser"? This guy probably has mental illness of some sort as they are sending him for a mental evaluation.

And, just another point: As someone who has family members with serious mental illness, it would be good if we could take a pause before using labels like "dirtbag", "loser" and/or "nut job" (just to through another one in) for another human being who may have mental illness. And even if that person does not, it really does not lend anything to one's argument and/or point.

You can have a mental illness and be a good person who doesn't harm others and there are people who have a mental illness and ARE dirtbag losers who stabs innocent people with a pair of scissors for no reason.

This violent maniac stabbed a women in the face in broad daylight before beating her with his fists. Was there a part of that story that you missed?

He is a dirtbag, and a loser. He earned those labels when he BROUGHT SCISSORS TO THE ESPLANADE TO STAB A WOMEN IN THE FACE.

Is it safe to say that you would also give a mugger a pass because he is "down on his luck"? Or when a junkie leaves their syringes in a school park, we shouldn't get mad because they have an addition.

I'm just sad that someone didnt steamroll this waste of space before he had a chance to harm an innocent women.

I have a family member with me talking illness as well, but they aren't attacking women. People who do that are criminals.

This is the kind of crime that really scares me. A random, unprovoked, violent attack.

..."Records in the case were impounded. Olivo was allowed to hide from public view during the hearing."

Isn't there a public interest in what the alleged attacker looks like, so potential previous victims or witnesses could identify him, or people could avoid him if and when he winds up back on the street.

Seriously, aren't public proceedings supposed to be, you know, public?

Why should someone presumed to be innocent be forced to be perp-walked in front of a camera? What if you've got potential victims for crimes we don't even know about yet. I think we should find out what you look like...and a full name, DOB, etc.

This man appears to be suffering from a psychosis. Let's heal him instead. It probably doesn't help psychoses to have your face plastered all over the TV and newspapers.
