
Trout House Comics snapped the bouquet somebody put in ol' Edgar's hand in honor of his birthday today. We were going to ask if the flowers were a bit too cheery, but it turns out Poe loved flowers.

Similar to the toast to Poe in Baltimore

For decades a person, possibly more than one, would set roses at Poe's grave in Baltimore. They would drink a toast to Edgar and then disappear leaving the unfinished bottle for Edgar's soul to drink (albeit his drinking ceased in life, to be nevermore.)

I think Poe is one of "our" early leaders in literature, when the US was still not taken seriously buy Europe. I recently read a bio called "Mournful and Never-ending Romance" which I recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about him.
