The South End can be so confusing

Signs pointing pedestrians in conflicting ways in the South End, near the Ink Block

To my perspective as a Roslindale resident, the Sound End is hardly south of anything! Typically inner city blinders...

Until Roxbury joined Boston in the 1860s, followed by Roslindale in the 1870s, the South End was the southernmost part of Boston.
