Coronavirus bonus: Cleaner MBTA vehicles, stations

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak says that by the end of the week, the T will have enough extra staffing to clean and disinfect all T subway cars and buses once a day - but will disinfect hand rails, fare gates and other surfaces people in stations might touch every four hours. Commuter-rail trains were already on a daily cleaning schedule.
Gov. Baker, meanwhile, said that the state is now urging all colleges and high schools to cancel programs where students go overseas for trips or extended stays.

Will there be any program to verify that the handrails, etc are actually virus free. Or will it just be pretend cleaning. With the large number of people who us the T there will need to be something that gives confidence that the cleaning is actually effective.

This isn't a laboratory. Noting is certified virus free. If you are that freaked out, wear rubber gloves or bike to work.
Yes, I'm sure that the MBTA
will be hauling out PCR machines to verify that there are no traces of SARS-CoV-2 on the escalator, despite only pretending to wave rags over the handrails.

You should still wash your hands
Even if they sterilize the hand rails, someone else will almost certainly touch them again before you. So just assume that anything you touch was just sneezed on and wash your hands before you touch your face or eat.
Just use an anti-virus program
Actually, humans are full of bacteria and not all viruses are harmful to humans or to animals. Oversanitizing things is how we end up with immune bugs like cdiff!
Perhaps you should share your concerns with someone trained in counseling. Worrying about whether your transit ride is completely sterile is the sort of thing that can send a person into a bad spiral.

There are people who are unable to resist licking the surfaces around them when they ride public transportation; they have particular reason to be concerned with the efficacy of the T's disinfection program, wouldn't you say?

I wonder what the alleged cleaning schedule is now. It does not appear to me that the Red Line and Orange Line trains are cleaned every day. And for how long will this alleged new cleaning schedule be in place?
There is a very pleasant lady
There is a very pleasant lady who picks up the trash on the Orange Line trains at Oak Grove in the morning that the p.i.g. pigs leave behind. I criticize the T as much as anybody but the cleanliness of the cars is attributable to the people occupying them.
While many people are slobs
the fact that MBTA trains, streetcars, and buses don't have trash receptacles doesn't help matters.
Platforms have trash recepticals
I'm sorry, that's ridiculous. Take your trash with you and pitch it in a can on the way out of the station.

I'm gonna assume that buses will actually only get cleaned once every other year. Which is still more frequently than now.
The T has hundreds of stations
A quick search shows that the T has 149 stops and stations on the Green, Blue, Red, Orange, and Silver lines, and 141 commuter rail stops and stations. And each will be disinfected every four hours?
Some of the stations look like they have never been cleaned...
You could clean those stations every hour...
They would still look horrible.
Just happened to get off the green line at Copley the other day. That place really just needs a gutting/overhaul....
MBTA needs an army of iRobot
MBTA needs an army of iRobot machines and UV sanitizers to clean every train and station all day continuously. HEPA filters for the tunnel air to meet minimum OSHA standards would be nice too.

To clean buses and trains that should be cleaned every day. I'll believe it when the aroma of urine and stale booze no longer greets me in the morning at Downtown crossing,

A which is the filthiest MBTA station contest, permit me to put forward my candidate. Hands down, it has to be Andrew station. It is the very arsehole of the MBTA.
A vague wipe with a rag holding a few drops of disinfectant? Hahaha!
Even just once a decade ... a pressure wash/steam clean?
Yesterday at Quincy Center
They were steam cleaning gum off the side walk in front of the station. I guess if you tripped and fell at least you'll land on clean concrete.
