Driver claims she smashed into a Cambridge utility pole because she was looking at her GPS, but police say it might have been the barbiturates she was on

Cambridge Police report arresting a Lakeville woman on a variety of charges yesterday afternoon after a crash that knocked down a utility pole on Prospect Street and caused "a substantial power outage" in the area.

Police say Ami Begin, 38, of Lakeville, told police she plowed into the pole because "she was looking down at the GPS on her phone." But, police continued:

Begin also admitted that she had been dosed with phenobarbital earlier in the day. Officers observed that Begin had pinpoint pupils, slow slurred speech, and she was unsteady on her feet. Begin voluntarily submitted to roadside assessments in order to determine if she could safely drive. During the assessments, Begin showed signs of impairment that would limit her ability to operate a motor vehicle. Begin was then informed that she was being placed under arrest for OUI Drugs. A subsequent inventory of Begin's motor vehicle yielded a quantity of prescription drugs, marijuana and paraphernalia.

Begin was ultimately charged with operating under the influence of drugs, reckless operation, unsafe operation, possession of Class B and E drugs and not having a valid inspection sticker.

She is also being issued a City Ordinance violation for possessing an open container of marijuana in her vehicle.

Innocent, etc.

I once saw a nurse help revive someone who was od'ing on the train with Narcan. The person told her he was having an episode of sleep apnea. Once you get past the denial stage, your road to recovery will be a lot smoother.

It is a Godsend that Cambridge has so many dispensaries to keep a huge chunk of pot-addled kamikaze drivers like this one off Boston roads.

It would be cool if we could put way more dispensaries in places where I do not like anyone... like Concord MA or Salem MA.

There's only 2 dispensaries actually open in Cambridge. It's funny you said Kamikaze drivers because there are way more bars serving drinks called Kamikazes you should be worried about more.

Pro tip #1 don't drink and drive.

Pro tip #2 Cambridge is a city: walk, take the T, or call an Uber.

It's not rocket science.

I guess this may explain the detour around part of Prospect St this morning.

After all, we don't know if the light pole wasn't wearing headphones, not in a crosswalk, or not wearing enough high-visibility gear.

She could have swerved to avoid a scofflaw cyclist!

If her excuse was she was looking down at her GPS, it sounds like it wasn't properly mounted on the dash so she also violated the new hands-free ordinance.

Haven't really seen any police forces out and about giving warnings during this "grace" period.

Oh well, I'm sure once thats over the police will got about actually ticketing motorists.

I like how "I was looking at my GPS" seemed like a reasonable excuse to her.
