Gyms and museums outside Boston get OK to open on Monday

COVID-19 Update: July 2, 2020

WBZ reports Gov. Baker announced Phase 3 of the state re-opening plan starts Monday and that various places will be able to re-open, but with reduced capacity - for example, gyms will only be able to open at 40% of their Before Times capacity, and members are supposed to wear masks even while lifting or pedaling.

Phase 3 in Boston starts July 13.

Also allowed to re-open: Function halls, but again, at reduced capacity and with a requirement to ensure people don't cluster in large groups - and no more than 25 people in a single space.

Bars, which have emerged as super-spreader spots in other states, will remain shut until after we either get a vaccine or drugs that work.

More details.

It's long past time to reopen those, if we are going to allow indoor dining and gyms.

According to the MA website.

Guess this means no going there to work or study though. No info on when that can happen.

Both Brookline & some Boston branches are just starting curbside pick-up Monday. Doesn't sound like they are ready to open for browsing, although that would be really nice.

Idiots were microwaving library books in an effort to disinfect them.

People are crazy!

That implies that it's a good idea to open gyms and restaurants. I kinda think it's terrible and won't be going back to my gym for a long time.

Plus, most libraries are providing remote and circulation services to varying extents, and likely to continue expanding those as they go well. Let's not just open the floodgates all at once, hmm?

Not everyone thinks it’s a horrible idea. I know getting out a bit these past couple weeks after being home alone has vastly improved my mental health, so a trip to the library to browse for a few minutes sounds great.

Sorry, we are smarter than your cute here in this part of the country. Nice troll attempt tho.

I can't find any mention of that. In fact I can't find the detailed info that the state normally puts online with all the fine print about any of this. Anyone else find it?

FWIW, I've heard that the Lifetime gym chain's outdoor pools in our area (Greater Boston) are open for lap swimming. (Also their "family pools".) But I don't know specifically about the state.

It's the locker room after - you can have single occupancy lanes with little transmission, esp with the chemicals. It's all the surfaces from the shower and changing after.

We are planning to reopen our Branch fitness centers and indoor pools in waves starting Monday, July 13. We are excited to welcome you back and will share the details of our reopening plans early next week.

You can already reserve a lane at the Waltham branch.

That was just the information I was looking for.

May as well stock up again, folks.

We're gonna have another surge.

Conversely, if we have another unemployment surge, a lot of people won’t be able to afford to stock up.

There’s always to side to a coin, these are tough calls which require calculated risk.

Unless you have a better approach. And prolonged social welfare schemes aren’t a viable solution.

Our governor has been listening to the public health people and the plans for moving forward include close monitoring of the numbers and going back a step if things regress (unlike some governors who insist that once things open they can't be closed again).

As a health researcher, I'm pretty comfortable with the way things are being done. The state is doing sensible things like, for one example, providing free testing and opening extra testing centers after the protests. I was at an online Q&A this week with some top staff from the state health department, including an epidemiologist who said that we did not see a surge in MA cases after the protests. They are keeping a close eye on metrics such as cases, ICU usage, hospital bed usage after each progression to a new stage of reopening.

Mask use mandatory. I only go for the treadmill. Can't see this working out.

I use a mask when I bike and it generally isn't an issue. I don't use my triple layer fabric one though - I use a lighter disposable one. I find that it is a good reminder to keep my intensity down to a sustainable level. Outdoor exercise without pollen is a plus, too.

Don't let other people tell you what it will be like - try it out for yourself.

How dare people exercise outside! They need to quit running for the year. All that hard work they put into their health and fitness should be shelved for the greater good! How dare they!
Bunch of meat heads! They even make me cry when I see my own body.

My physical and mental health has certainly been negatively affected by not going to the gym.

Staying at home has meant I'm not as careful about what I eat, I don't do as much meal prep, anxiety has made me stress eat and drink more, and I've definitely gained weight and lost definition, muscle tone, and stamina. My back hurts from the chair I'm using and I miss my standing desk.

But that's all fixable. I probably won't die of COVID, but I could kill someone else, or have lifetime heath issues, so I'mma skip spin class and swimming laps this summer.

It's too hot and too humid!

Or at least run early morning or, if you are like me, after sundown. And bring water with you. Hydrate!

And, or course, prepare to cover your nose and mouth if you are around others. That goes without saying.

98.5% (or more) of those who contract Covid recover. Those under 50 have a miniscule chance of dying from it. Meanwhile, three have been murdered in the last three days in Boston. As Governor Coumo (D-NY) has said all along, "the facts don't justify the fear." Enjoy the 4th, preferably outside of Boston for your own safety.

So 9,000 people have been murdered in three months in MA ??? Show your work, fishy.

You'd do better to convince your cop friends to wear their damn masks, as they have relatively high exposures to the general public, than pretend that you know anything about public health.
