Herald newsroom shrinks again

CommonWealth Magazine reports the Herald yesterday laid off three reporters, two columnists and a photographer. Howie Carr still lists himself as "Columnist for @BostonHerald" on his Twitter feed, so we're assuming he wasn't one of the columnists.

Real journalists getting the boot so they can pay Howie all that cash to pay his Mar-A-Lago membership. All so he can jam his head up Trump’s ass.
Worst part is Howie doesn’t even write his “columns” anymore, one of his millennial crew of budding Breitbart hosts transcribes his rants on his radio show and the Herald gleefully prints it for the delight of racists everywhere.

If ownership is doing its job
They have insight into which content gets clicks, sells ads, or draws readers to subscribe to the dead-tree version. If that's the case, Howie probably still drives revenue and that's why they'd continue to pay him.
It's akin to why Tucker Carlson has the highest ratings in cable news. While one might not agree with what he has to say, there are a lot of people who do and watch.

"Herald Comumnists" is a subjective term.

Carrcinoma is trying to sell as much griftware as possible before November. Can you imagine how many times he asks Trumpohiles in the White House whether orangina had listened to his show or read his retread shtick.
Imagine being a real journalist and losing your job so these dumpsterdivers can still collect a check?

Why does the Herald still exist?
Even / especially in its current reduced condition, it's hard to see how it can be making any money for its owner.
It's a vehicle for ads.
I have never seen as many ads on any other website.

Because there is a market for an alternative to the Globe.
In all honesty, the Herald is in trouble because it is the kind of paper you grab while commuting, and people aren’t riding the T or stopping by their corner store like they used to. They raised the price by a buck a month ago, making it 50 cents more expensive than the Globe. Plus, sports is their forte (though they used to report on things the Globe missed) and that’s not going well with zero pro sports going on in the area.
Also, their current management sucks.
Newspapers on the T
People haven’t been reading newspapers on the T for years. They wouldn’t even pick up the free Metros and that went out of business before the virus attacked. If you ever looked up from your phone on the subway, you’d see everybody else reading their phones.
Yet somehow the Metro was a thing
And let's not forget that at one time there were 2 free subway tabloids in Boston. Yet somehow the Metro survived until the new owners decided to concentrate on New York and Philly, with free distribution.
Yes, people do (or did back when I was riding) read newspapers on the T.

The Herald has been in trouble far longer than that.
True
And to some extent the same is true of any newspaper nowadays, but losing one of your main audience sources can't help. The reason the Globe caught on early that the home delivery fiasco they had a while back was bad was that they know how important home delivery is to them.
And again, having the current ownership is problematic, regardless of Covid. Still, Covid could hasten things.
