Marty Walsh shows how to make a mask out of an old T-shirt. Walsh also says he hopes Boston gets to the point where it can distribute free masks to residents.

One can do the same thing with a bandana, as well.

This is easy to make.
I made one like that, and used two of those coated hair elastics for fastening the mask onto the head. I seriously wonder, however, if this mask is really tight enough to keep out bacteria and viruses or whatever. I'll use another thin face mask under it, however, just to make sure.
It doesn't
None of these non medical masks keep out the virus (although they're probably a more effective barrier than nothing). Wearing a mask is about protecting others from stuff coming out of your mouth and nose (including regular exhalation). What protects you is others wearing masks.
