Yes, if you don't have a criminal record. And why is race a factor? are there no white poor people and are all non white people poor?

You would have to ask the group of men, and again, why is their race significant?

They have a criminal record for life but are not criminals for life.

That depends on details of state law and what restrictions it places on people after their sentence is complete. For example, preventing professional licensing.

Now, I could go into a whole thing about home equity pros and cons, but let's just leave this to weaponry.

With legally obtained weapons, one could purchase using a credit card and face the usury that is not paying off your full balance. If you are buying using a less than legal process, you could scrounge up what funds you can get, meaning that you may have to charge things you would pay cash for, thus leading to that negative net worth.
